North Korea sends its first tweet over 3G service

North Korea's 3G cellular network is up and running, as proven by a warm "hello" sent out through Twitter. 3G service is new to North Korea, but its own citizens cannot use it.?

That Twitter missive, sent Monday from Koryolink's main service center in downtown Pyongyang using my iPhone, marked a milestone for North Korea: It was believed to be the first tweet sent from a cellphone using the country's new 3G mobile data service.

Later, as we were driving through Pyongyang, I used my iPhone to snap a photo of a new roadside banner referring to North Korea's controversial Feb. 12 nuclear test while AP's Chief Asia photographer David Guttenfelder shot an image of a commuter walking beneath a bridge at dusk. We uploaded these images to Instagram geotagged "Pyongyang."

Pretty ordinary stuff in the world of social media, but revolutionary for North Korea, a country with an intricate set of rules designed to stage manage the flow of images and information both inside and beyond its borders.

In the past, rules were strict for tourists visiting North Korea. On a bus journey across the Demilitarized Zone into the border city of Kaesong in 2008, we were told: No cellphones, no long camera lenses, no shooting photos without permission. The curtains were drawn to prevent us from looking outside as we drove through the countryside, and through the cracks we could see soldiers stationed along the road with red flags. We were warned they'd raise those flags and stop the bus for inspection if they spotted a camera pointed out the window. As we left North Korea, immigration officials went through our cameras, clicking through the photos to make sure we weren't taking home any images that were objectionable.

In 2009, I did not offer up my iPhone as we went through customs. But to no avail. The eagle-eyed officer dug deep into the pocket where I'd tucked the phone away, wagged his finger and slipped the phone into a little black bag. No phone, no address book, no music: It was as though I'd left the modern world behind at Sunan airport and stepped back in time to a seemingly prehistoric analog era.

Eventually, Guttenfelder and I settled into a working routine. We'd leave our cellphones at the airport but use locally purchased phones using SIM cards provided by Koryolink, the joint Egyptian-North Korean cellphone venture that established a 3G network in 2008, but without data. We brought iPod Touches and connected to the world, including Twitter, using broadband Internet that may be installed on request at our hotel, which is for international visitors.

We knew in January that change was afoot. "Bring your own phone next time," a Koryolink saleswoman told me at the airport as we were departing. The next day, the longstanding rule of requiring visitors to relinquish their phones was gone.

But we were waiting for the day when Koryolink would begin offering mobile Internet, and hounded the Egyptians posted to North Korea from Orascom Telecom Media and?Technology?for news.

"Soon," they kept telling us.

Last week, they called with good news: 3G mobile Internet would be available within a week ? but only for foreigners.

All we had to do when we arrived in February was show our passports, fill out a registration form, provide our phones' IMEI numbers and pop in our Koryolink SIM cards. It's a costly luxury: SIM cards are 50 euros, or about $70, and while calls to Switzerland are an inexplicably cheap 38 euro cents a minute, calls to the U.S. cost about $8 a minute.

How to Change Windows Explorer's Starting Location

How to Change Windows Explorer's Starting LocationBy default, when you start Windows Explorer, it opens up to your Libraries. If you'd rather have it open to a different folder, changing this behavior is very easy. Here's how.

How to Change Windows Explorer's Starting LocationI don't really use Libraries all that much, so it's annoying to have Windows Explorer constantly sending me there. I'd rather Windows Explorer start up in my user folder, so I can access my Dropbox and other useful folders without having to go through Libraries. Luckily, this is easy to change:

  1. Right-click on the Windows Explorer icon in your taskbar. Right click on "File Explorer" and choose Properties.
  2. Under "Target," change the path to the folder you want Windows Explorer to display by default. In my case, that's F:\Users\Whitson for my user folder.

That's it! However, some folders?like My Computer, for example?don't have a specific "path," they're something that's part of the OS itself. In those cases, our friends at the How-To Geek note that you can use the GUID of the location to make it work. For example, if you wanted it to open My Computer, you would change the target to:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /E,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Google around to find the GUID of the special location you want to use, if necessary. If you use Win+E to open Explorer, this trick won't work?but there are easy ways to change its default behavior too.

'Fat worms' inch scientists toward better biofuel production

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Fat worms confirm that researchers from Michigan State University have successfully engineered a plant with oily leaves -- a feat that could enhance biofuel production as well as lead to improved animal feeds.

The results, published in the current issue of The Plant Cell, the journal of the American Society of Plant Biologists, show that researchers could use an algae gene involved in oil production to engineer a plant that stores lipids or vegetable oil in its leaves ? an uncommon occurrence for most plants.

Traditional biofuel research has focused on improving the oil content of seeds. One reason for this focus is because oil production in seeds occurs naturally. Little research, however, has been done to examine the oil production of leaves and stems, as plants don't typically store lipids in these tissues.

Christoph Benning, MSU professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, led a collaborative effort with colleagues from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center. The team's efforts resulted in a significant early step toward producing better plants for biofuels.

"Many researchers are trying to enhance plants' energy density, and this is another way of approaching it," Benning said. "It's a proof-of-concept that could be used to boost plants' oil production for biofuel use as well as improve the nutrition levels of animal feed."

Benning and his colleagues began by identifying five genes from one-celled green algae. From the five, they identified one that, when inserted into Arabidopsis thaliana, successfully boosted oil levels in the plant's leaf tissue.

To confirm that the improved plants were more nutritious and contained more energy, the research team fed them to caterpillar larvae. The larvae that were fed oily leaves from the enhanced plants gained more weight than worms that ate regular leaves.

For the next phase of the research, Benning and his colleagues will work to enhance oil production in grasses and algae that have economic value. The benefits of this research are worth pursuing, Benning said.

"If oil can be extracted from leaves, stems and seeds, the potential energy capacity of plants may double," he said. "Further, if algae can be engineered to continuously produce high levels of oil, rather than only when they are under stress, they can become a viable alternative to traditional agricultural crops."

Moreover, algae can be grown on poor agricultural land ? a big plus in the food vs. fuel debate, he added.

"These basic research findings are significant in advancing the engineering of oil-producing plants," said Kenneth Keegstra, GLBRC scientific director and MSU University Distinguished Professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. "They will help write a new chapter on the development of production schemes that will enhance the quantity, quality and profitability of both traditional and nontraditional crops."

Nokia Siemens Networks aims for No.2 slot in U.S. market

BARCELONA (Reuters) - Nokia-Siemens Networks is mounting an expansion drive in North America where the world's third-largest telecom equipment maker believes a spate of deal-making among mobile carriers will play out in its favor.

Chief Executive Rajeev Suri said deals by Japan's Softbank to buy 70 percent of Sprint Nextel Corp for $20 billion, and Deutsche Telekom's purchase of MetroPCS was an opportunity for NSN to grab new U.S. business.

"It's a long game. We have gotten from number 5 to number 3 in past few years, and now we will go target number 2," Suri said in an interview at Mobile World Congress.

NSN may soon see its ownership change because a 6-year old shareholder pact between partners Nokia and Siemens expires on April 1.

The German group is eager to exit but Nokia's priority is its handset business so it is unlikely to buy out Siemens.

Suri said it was not likely that Siemens and Nokia would reach a decision on the shareholder pact at its expiry date, but said the issue had no impact on the business.

"You have to ask them what they want to do," he said.

Nokia and Siemens declined to comment.

RECOVERY MODE

The company is much healthier than it was a year ago after a restructuring which included a cull of staff from 75,000 to 58,000 and sale of non-core assets. Operating and gross margins rose last year, and NSN actually contributed to co-parent Nokia's cash flow instead of being a drain.

In the U.S. market, Suri said Softbank's arrival could work to NSN's advantage because NSN could capitalize on its strong supplier relationship with Softbank in Japan to win more contracts at Sprint and Clearwire, which Sprint is in the process of buying.

When operators merge, they often rationalize their network gear suppliers so as to cut costs, putting contracts in play.

At T-Mobile, NSN and Ericsson are the primary suppliers of mobile gear, while at MetroPCS it's Ericsson and Samsung.

"I think they will consolidate suppliers," said Suri, opening up an opportunity for NSN to displace Samsung.

GLOBAL TOP THREE

The group's renewed vigor in the United States - sales in North America rose 20 percent last year to 1.294 billion euros - could increase pressure on loss-making Alcatel-Lucent, the second-biggest network gear supplier in the U.S. market after Ericsson.

Suri is confident that NSN can cope with the fierce competition and stagnant spending by global telecom operators.

"I still believe the global market only has room for three long-term profitable companies that can thrive over the next few years," he said.

Few dispute that Ericsson and China's Huawei will be the top two, with NSN and Alcatel-Lucent vying for the third spot.

Suri said there might not be enough M&A to reduce the number of players and that some might just limp along not making money but still staying in the business.

"The strong are getting stronger and the weak are getting weaker," he said.

"Just look at LTE (4G) contracts being awarded in India, Russia, Japan, and elsewhere: the same players win."

Market research Dell'Oro said Ericsson earned $761.30 million in LTE radio access revenue in the fourth quarter, while NSN got $451.40 million. Huawei's share stood at $428.80 million, Alcatel-Lucent's $295.90 million, and Samsung's $132.10 million.

The Pinnacle at EdenHill Uses Social Media to Create Online ...

Featured in the Comal County Business Journal | February 12, 2013

Future Pinnacle at EdenHill residents use social media to develop an online neighborhood.

NEW BRAUNFELS ? While traditional media still plays a key role in the lives of seniors, online media is rapidly growing among this demographic.

According to the latest 2012 research of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, ?53 percent of American adults age 65 and older use the Internet or email; 34 percent of [those] Internet users use social networking sites such as Facebook, and 18 percent do so on a typical day.?

Baby Boomers, who are the emerging senior population, have an even greater dependency on online media. The Pew Internet and American Life Project also reports 80 percent of Boomers are online, and among that 80 percent, 51 percent engage in social networking.

As EdenHill geared up in the summer of 2010 to launch its expansion and redevelopment, which includes the addition of The Pinnacle at EdenHill, a 103-unit independent living complex, the sales and marketing staff had the foresight to lay down the roots of a ?new community? long before the building took shape.

(AP) ? Who'll be the first to feel the sting?

Jobless Americans who have been out of work for a long time and local governments that are paying off loans to fix roads and schools are in tough spots when it comes to the automatic federal budget cuts that are scheduled to kick in Friday.

About 2 million long-term unemployed people could see checks now averaging $300 a week reduced by about $30. There could also be reductions in federal payments that subsidize clean energy, school construction and state and local public works projects. Low-income Americans seeking heating assistance or housing or other aid might encounter longer waits.

Government employees could get furlough notices as early as next week, though cuts in their work hours won't occur until April.

The timing of the "sequester" spending cuts has real consequences for Americans, but it also has a political ramifications. How quickly and fiercely the public feels the cuts could determine whether President Barack Obama and lawmakers seek to replace them with a different deficit reduction plan.

Eager to put pressure on Republican lawmakers to accept his blend of targeted cuts and tax increases Obama has been highlighting the impact of the automatic cuts in grim terms. He did it again on Monday, declaring the threat of the cuts is already harming the national economy.

Republicans say he is exaggerating and point to rates of spending, even after the cuts, that would be higher than in 2008 when adjusted for inflation. All Obama has to do to avoid the damage, House Speaker John Boehner said at the Capitol, is agree to the GOP's recommended spending cuts ? with no tax increases.

By all accounts, most of the pain of the $85 billion in spending reductions to this year's federal budget would be slow in coming. The dire consequences that Obama officials say Americans will encounter ? from airport delays and weakened borders to reduced parks programs and shuttered meatpacking plants ? would unfold over time as furloughs kick in and agencies begin to adjust to their spending reductions.

"These impacts will not all be felt on day one," Obama acknowledged in a meeting with governors at the White House on Monday. "But rest assured the uncertainty is already having an effect."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned that the federal government would be unable to "maintain the same level of security at all places around the country" once the automatic cuts began to take effect.

The public will feel the results "in the next few weeks," she said, and "it will keep growing."

The majority of the federal budget is in fact walled off from the cuts. Social Security and veterans' programs are exempt, and cuts to Medicare are generally limited to a 2 percent, $10 billion reduction in payments to hospitals and doctors. Most programs that help the poor, like Medicaid, food stamps, subsidized school lunches, Pell Grants and supplemental security income payments are also exempt.

Still, the Pentagon will feel the brunt of half the cuts. Pay for active military is off-limits for cuts, so the rest of the defense budget must absorb the hit. The Obama administration says defense contractors have already ramped down work, contributing to a dip in economic activity in the fourth quarter of last year. The Navy has decided not to deploy an aircraft carrier as planned to the Persian Gulf.

Elsewhere, the White House's budget office says long-term unemployed Americans would lose an average of more than $400 in benefits over the year. The cuts do not affect state unemployment benefits, which jobless workers typically get soon after their loss of work. The federal reductions could begin immediately, though some analysts say the government could delay them for a short period to avoid a harmful hit on the economy.

Bill Hoagland, a former top Republican Senate budget aide and now senior vice president at the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington think tank, said the administration must be "betwixt and between" when it comes to addressing reductions in programs like jobless aid.

"They want to make sure the American public knows this sequester is a bad thing, but they also don't want to disrupt the economy too much," he said. "It's not that the reductions won't take place. But they could delay the impact of that until later in the year."

Administration officials also say the Treasury Department is prepared to begin reducing subsidies that cover interest payments by state and local governments on public works, school and renewable energy projects. That means those governments will have to find money in their budgets to make up the difference in bond interest payments, and while that might not affect projects already under way, it could delay new construction efforts.

The sequester, says Douglas Rice of the Center on Budget and Policy priorities, also would mean that families that leave subsidized housing would be less likely to be replaced with people from waiting lists, and that eventually some families could lose their apartments.

Many federal programs, like heating aid for the poor, already have many more people seeking assistance than the program budgets can cover. Funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, for instance, has fluctuated greatly in recent years, with the administration proposing to cut it by 13 percent this year. In such cases, it may be impossible for people denied aid to know whether it's because of the sequester since they might have been denied help anyway.

In some instances the cuts will be felt not by beneficiaries being thrown out of programs but by longer delays to get help. In the case of subsidized housing, for example, there are already long waits for assistance in most of the country.

In the case of the Women, Infants and Children program for low-income pregnant women and their children, the government has generally tried to make sure that every eligible woman can get food aid. States aren't permitted to cut the food benefit, which means fewer people will be served. The Agriculture Department says it will prioritize things so that pregnant women and nursing mothers keep their aid but post-partum women who do not breastfeed could lose their aid.

Who gets hit first also depends on how the government's budget flows. Education aid to school districts, for instance, is delivered in the fall, so impacts won't be felt until the new school year. But some teachers are already being informed that they could lose their jobs in August or September. Most Head Start programs won't feel cuts until the upcoming school year, too.

Some programs, like subsidized child care for the poor, are run by states, which will have flexibility in how to allocate the cuts. Just one in six eligible low-income families benefits from a federally funded child care slot. Cuts to the program leave states with difficult options: reduce the number of children cared for, require poor families to contribute more or cut payments to providers.

"I don't think people are going to feel it as dramatically as the administration has been suggesting," said Hoagland. "I'm not questioning the administration's numbers, I'm questioning their timing."

Bargain-hunting gives South African stocks a boost

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African stocks edged up on Monday as investors hunted for bargains following a recent sell-off with banks and retailers among the top gainers.

Major retailers, the biggest losers on the bourse so far this year after a thunderous rise in 2012, recouped some lost ground. Mr Price gained 2.5 percent higher to 121.82 rand and Woolworths climbed 3.6 percent to 68.80 rand.

Investors have been offloading retailers from their portfolios over the last month after a spate of sales updates and earnings results failed to justify the companies' lofty trading multiples.

The JSE Top-40 index was up 0.3 percent to 35,359.19 and the broader All-share index gained by the same margin, to 39,787.96.

"There's still a lot of nervousness in the market ahead of the budget, the outcome of Italy elections and the debt ceiling but there is some bargain hunting after last week's sell-off," Henre Herselman, a trader a Nedbank Private Wealth said.

Nedbank, whose 19 percent rise in annual profit undershot market expectations, gained 0.8 percent to 189.50 rand after beating forecasts with a 24 percent hike in dividend payout.

Rival FirstRand improved 0.75 percent to 30.73 rand after the lender said first-half headline earnings per share likely rose as much as 29 percent.

On the downside, contract mining and equipment firm Eqstra dropped 1.8 percent to 5.99 rand, falling for the second day on news of a 146 million rand buyout offer for shares it does not already own in civil engineering firm Protech Khuthele Holdings.

A below average 143 million shares were traded, according to preliminary exchange data, with advancers outpacing decliners 204 to 112, while 55 shares were unchanged.

Firefox phones coming this summer

(AP) ? Mozilla, the non-profit foundation behind the popular Firefox Web browser, is getting into phones. But it's not stopping at Web browsers ? it's launching an entire phone operating system.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based foundation said Sunday that phones running Firefox OS will appear this summer, starting in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela.

The Firefox OS will land in a crowded environment, where many small operating systems are trying to become the "third eco-system," alongside Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Together, those two account for 91 percent of smartphone sales, according to research firm IDC.

Mozilla Foundation has an ally in phone companies, who are interested in seeing an alternative to Apple and Google, particularly one coming from a non-profit foundation. Thirteen phone companies around the world have committed to supporting Firefox phones, Mozilla said, including Sprint Nextel in the U.S., though it gave no time frame for a release. Other supporters include Telecom Italia, America Movil of Mexico and Deutsche Telekom of Germany. DT is the parent of T-Mobile USA, but plans to sell Firefox phones first in Poland.

Phone makers that plan to make Firefox phones include Huawei and ZTE of China and LG of Korea. The first devices will be inexpensive touchscreen smartphones.

All the phones will run on chips supplied by San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., whose CEO Paul Jacobs appeared at Mozilla's press event Sunday in Barcelona, Spain, on the eve of the world's largest cellphone trade show.

The industry has seen various attempts to launch "open" smartphone operating systems, with little success. Jay Sullivan, vice president of products at Mozilla, said these failed because they were designed "by committee," with too many constituents to please. While developing and supporting the Firefox browser, Mozilla has learned to develop large-scale "open" projects effectively, he said.

He also said that putting quality third-party applications on Firefox phones will be easy, because they're based on HTML 5, an emerging standard for Web applications.

"Firefox OS has achieved something that no device software platform has previously managed - translating an industry talking shop into a huge commitment from both carriers and hardware vendors at its commercial launch," said Tony Cripps an analyst at research firm Ovum. "Neither Android nor Symbian ? the closest benchmarks in terms of broad industry sponsorship that we've previously seen ? have rallied the level of support that Firefox OS has achieved so early in its development."

PowerbyProxi debuts wireless charging solution, aims to fully integrate it into future smartphones (video)

PowerbyProxi debuts wireless charging solution, aims to fully integrate it into future smartphones video

The pathway to innovation is paved with failed attempts to produce wireless charging solutions that a) actually work and b) people genuinely want to use, but we've got yet another upstart here at Mobile World Congress willing to give it a go. PowerbyProxi's solution looks pretty similar to renditions we've seen from Fulton Innovation, but it's quick to point out the differences. The loosely-coupled method uses a bantam receiver that's "efficient enough to be integrated into the processor board of a smartphone without causing over-heating."

While previous industry designs have resulted in longer charging times than if the device were plugged into a wall socket, PowerbyProxi's solution reportedly "provides charging at the same speed as wired charging." In fact, it claims to offer the only system that can rejuvenate up to three devices at the same time at full power. If you're wondering what working group these guys are going to side with, that much is still up in the air -- it's remaining "agnostic towards the selection of an ultimate standard" for now.

We spoke with the company here at Mobile World Congress, and it confirmed to us that it's working with the top five major battery manufacturers, and we should see wireless AA and AAA cells "within 12 months." It wouldn't confirm how soon we'd see it in phones, tablets or laptops (yeah, it'll work in all of 'em), but it's clearly working with some of the top OEMs and hoping for the best. In the demo we witnessed, specially equipped Galaxy S III handsets charged alongside one another, even when barely clinging to the charging pad. Despite a bunch of metallic objects being heaped on the pad, it was intelligent enough to only send power to the phones, keeping gum boxes and coins cool, calm and collected. Head on past the break for quick video tour as well as a press release.

Flaherty and the Ford brothers head to Chicago

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and Doug Ford are spending some quality time in Chicago.

The trio ? Rob Ford was seen leaving Toronto City Hall with a green gym bag? ? are expected to spend the weekend as Parliament returns Monday after a week-long break.

A spokesman for Mr. Flaherty said the minister?s trip was personal and would not comment.

Mr. Flaherty endorsed Mr. Ford?s Toronto mayoral candidacy in 2010.

Mr. Flaherty?s long-standing family friendship with the Fords dates back to Doug Ford Sr., father of Rob and Doug, and his stint as a provincial Tory MPP under Mike Harris.

(AP) ? With 9 minutes left, New Mexico guard Kendall Williams trudged to the bench with a career-high 28 points ? and four fouls.

While he caught his breath, No. 22 Colorado State built a six-point lead over the 16th-ranked Lobos.

Moby Arena was rocking and the Rams were rolling, about to extend the nation's third-longest home winning streak to 28 games.

Williams had other things in mind ? and 18 points left to score.

"Luckily, some shots went in," said the junior guard from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., who finished with a career-best 46 points ? almost double his previous career high of 24 ? in leading New Mexico to a 91-82 win Saturday.

Williams set a Mountain West Conference record with 10 3-pointers and his 46 points were the most in the 47-year-old arena, topping the 44 scored by Portland State's Freeman Williams on Nov. 29, 1975.

"He should be hands-down player of the week, I would think," Lobos coach Steve Alford deadpanned.

Williams helped the Lobos overcome that 70-64 deficit at the 6-minute mark by hitting a trio of 3-pointers, a dunk and seven free throws down the stretch as New Mexico outscored the Rams 27-12.

"He got on a roll today," Alford said. "And it was a 40-minute roll."

Actually, it was a 33-minute roll. He spent seven minutes on the bench in foul trouble.

"That's what's really impressive," Alford said. "He sat about a four-minute stretch there in the second half and still scores and does what he does. It's pretty amazing. But he did a great job in that last six minutes not picking up that fifth" foul.

Center Alex Kirk added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lobos (23-4, 10-2), who increased their lead in the conference race to two games over the Rams (21-5, 8-4).

Colton Iverson had 26 points and 15 boards for the Rams, who looked like they were going to move into a first-place tie atop the standings after taking a 70-64 lead at the 6-minute mark.

Williams' treys highlighted a 14-2 run that gave New Mexico a 78-72 lead before the Rams sent the Lobos to the line over the final two minutes.

"Well, that was a special night to watch," Alford said. "I told him that. I said I never had a 10-3 game, I never got to 46. Forty-two was the most I ever scored and eight 3s was the most I ever made in a game."

"There's not too many one-ups you can get on Coach Alford, especially in scoring," Williams said. "I might be on top of the world for the rest of the weekend."

Williams' previous career best was 24 points against Indiana State and New Mexico State earlier this season.

"The players kept feeding me the ball," said Williams, who had 15 family members, including his grandmother, in the stands. "It was really just a team effort, some of the shots I hit were tough. But if the teammates didn't put me in position and the coaches didn't put me in position, I wouldn't have had quite the night I had."

The Rams blamed themselves for Williams' big game.

"We had no answer for him," Rams coach Larry Eustachy said. "... He was completely unstoppable. I want to see film on how many of those shots were contested."

His bet is that not many were.

The Rams, who gave up 45 points to Air Force's Michael Lyons a week earlier, left Williams open early on while locking down Tony Snell, who scored 10 points Saturday after getting 23 in their first meeting last month.

"He hadn't been shooting well this year," Dorian Green said. "We gave him some uncontested looks, let him get hot. Guys are too good in our league to do that."

"We gave him open looks early," Wes Eikmeier added. "He got hot and then he was feeling it the rest of the night."

Green (20) and Eikmeier (22) gave the Rams three 20-point scorers in their losing effort. Eikmeier scored 11 straight to put the Rams ahead 55-50.

The Lobos quieted the crowd with a 12-6 run to regain the lead at 62-61, but Williams, less than a minute after returning to the lineup, was whistled for his fourth foul and took a seat at the nine-minute mark.

"I was real mad," Williams said. "My emotions were high, but (assistant coach Craig) Neal came over while Coach Alford was doing his thing and calmed me down and says, 'You're going to have to bring it home, kid. Don't foul and get the shots that you need.' And that's exactly what I did."

The Rams were coming off a two-point loss at UNLV on Wednesday night that snapped their six-game winning streak, which began after a 66-61 loss to the Lobos in Albuquerque last month.

They hadn't lost at home since Nov. 11, 2012, to Southern Miss., which was coached at the time by Eustachy, who took the Rams job last offseason.

Williams' 10th 3-pointer ? in 13 tries ? broke the conference mark of nine set by several players, most recently UNLV's Chace Stanback against Central Arkansas on Dec. 28, 2011. It was a difficult shot from the right corner.

"Why not? Just throw it up there, had hit a few already," Williams said. "With the hoop the size it was tonight and the rhythm I was feeling, it just felt like I had to throw that one up."

One huge step for Nike -- and mission control

Nike

NBA all-stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant received special shoes from Nike commemorating Houston's tie to space exploration.

By Robert Z. Pearlman
Space.com

Houston, you've got a space shoe.

Nike has introduced a new set of colors and designs for its line of basketball sneakers sparked by the Texas city's space lineage.

Specifically, the Christopher C. Kraft, Jr. Mission Control Center?at NASA's Johnson Space Center ? widely known by its radio call sign "Houston" ? provided the sportswear company with the "creative inspiration" for a collection of shoes for NBA all-stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant.

Houston received the official nickname of "Space City" in 1967 because it is the heart of NASA's manned spaceflight program. The Johnson Space Center, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2011, has led crewed missions to the moon and International Space Station, and is home to the United States' astronaut corps.

"Space exploration defies practical reality. To launch into space on a mission to reveal the unknown can be mind- boggling," Nike stated on its website. "There is no limit to the potential for discovery. These unlimited barriers also apply to Nike Basketball's design philosophy ? no limits, no restrictions, rooted in exploration and discovery." [Giant Leaps: Top Milestones of Human Spaceflight]

Working together as a team, Nike Basketball's color lead Eugene Rogers and graphic designer Erick Goto dove into Houston's connection to space exploration to create more than just a few new shoe designs. They also devised a basketball universe led by Nike's elite three players. James, Bryant and Durant appear in a distant universe, where players are not just stars ? they come to life as fictional exoplanets on each of the three following shoes:

  • LEBRON X ? "Originating from fictional Nike Space Program (NSP) planet NSP-LJ6, LeBron James' dominance was born from the volcanic surface in the planet's mantle," describes Nike. "He's rumored to have journeyed to Earth on a meteor made of the galaxy's hardest substance ? black diamonds."
  • KOBE 8 SYSTEM ? "With origins rooted on a planet marked as NSP-KB24, the Ice Mamba circles the volatile surface as guardian of the five rings. The wise veteran is known to strike with moves that leave his opponents frozen."
  • KD V ? "Identified as Dark Matter, the biological and molecular breakdown of this figure (Durant) remains a puzzle for scientists. Early readings of its origin, NSP-KD35, have sent back conflicting reports of a planet that is simultaneously solid, liquid, and gas ? properties that make his game adaptable to any situation."

"It was an intricate, creative and fun project intended to celebrate the game's best," Nike wrote about the brightly colored shoes' design.

The space concept was also incorporated into select Nike Basketball apparel including the Nike Hyper Elite Galaxy shorts and a collection of three T-shirts for James, Bryant and Durant.

The three Nike Basketball shoes specially engineered for Houston ? KOBE 8 SYSTEM, KD V and LEBRON X ? went on sale Feb. 15 at select retail stores and online at Nike.com. The sneakers' introduction was timed to coincide with the 2013 NBA All-Star Game, which was played Feb. 17 in Houston's Toyota Center.

The new Houston basketball collection is not the first time Nike has looked toward space exploration for inspiration. Last February, the company introduced a "galactic theme" based on astronauts' spacesuits for James, Bryant and Durant. And in January 2010, Nike partnered with Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin to introduce the Rocket Hero Mavrk Mid 2 featuring an upper design based on photos taken by the astronaut while he was on the moon.

College of Science dean writes memoir

?

In the mere four years since he joined the Notre Dame family as the dean of the College of Science in 2008, Gregory Crawford has ridden his bike across the country three times, met two U.S. presidents and traveled to Haiti on several occasions.?

In his recently published book, ?The Education of a Notre Dame Science Dean: My Four-Year Ride with the Irish,? Crawford recounts his experiences thus far in his tenure at the University and the ways they have impacted him personally.?

Although he began writing the book in September, Crawford said he contemplated the focus of the book during his third cross-country bike ride, this one stretching from Boston to California.

?I think it was all about the people,? he said. ?I was originally only going to write it for my daughters, but then someone said, ?You should really launch this thing because other people would like to read about ? how you can learn as an adult.?

Crawford said he considered his personal growth in light of two commencement speeches he has given: one at Trinity School in South Bend shortly after he arrived at Notre Dame and one last spring at his alma?mater, Kent State University.?

?I was sort of reflecting on two kind of endpoints,? he said. ?I saw how my message changed and was sort of thinking about why that was the case.?

Crawford said he realized the four years he spent at Notre Dame between those public addresses prompted a profound change in his mindset and experiences.

?I?ve been so influenced by Notre Dame students, alumni and the sort of bigger mission [of Notre Dame],? he said. ?That?s how I started to put [the book] together.?

During his tenure at the University, Crawford has had the opportunity to fish with University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore Hesburgh and meet former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and President Barack Obama, in addition to scores of Notre Dame students and alumni. These encounters form the core of his book?s content, Crawford said.

With regard to the time he spent with Hesburgh, Crawford said its significance was ?not so much about fishing.?

?I mean, who can say they?ve [fished with Hesburgh]?? he said. ?It?s about spending three days on a lake listening to him talk about the history of Notre Dame and the United States and how he influenced it.?

Crawford said he recalls feeling ?almost flabbergasted? when Carter sought out the Notre Dame delegation in Haiti in 2008.?

?When [Carter] said, ?Hey, are you with Notre Dame?? I really realized how leaders and presidents actually view the University and how much they knew about it,? Crawford said. ?In some ways I was shocked, but after you think about it, you?re like, no kidding, of course they know Notre Dame and understand its values and really cherish what we?re trying to accomplish here.?

But as the Dean of Notre Dame?s College of Science, one of Crawford?s most cherished relationships is his ?phenomenal partnership? with the family of former football coach Ara Parseghian and the medical research foundation named for him.?

As a result of the diagnosis and eventual passing of three of Parseghian?s grandchildren with the rare genetic disease Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC), Crawford said the University has committed strongly to finding a cure for the disease through research.?

?Since we have such a connection with the family ? we want to be the ones that really solve this in the future,? he said. ?We?re doing everything we can and partnering with anybody else who shares our mission and passion for finding a cure for this disease.??

Crawford himself has made a personal commitment to the cause by contributing all proceeds from his book to the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation and completing three transcontinental bike rides to raise awareness of NPC.?

But more important than the research itself has been Crawford?s friendship with Cindy Parseghian, one of the foundation?s co-founders and a member of the Science Advisory Board, Crawford said.?

?What she and [husband] Mike [Parseghian] did with the foundation around the world to search for a cure for the disease that eventually took the lives of their own children ? is just phenomenal,? he said. ?The hope they provide to families is just unbelievable even though their kids have since passed.?

Working so closely with the Foundation has given Crawford the chance to interact with legendary coach Ara Parseghian, a relationship made even more significant by the fact that Crawford?s great-uncle played football for Knute Rockne.

?Whenever we ask [Parseghian] for anything, he?s always there. He?s the nicest guy,? Crawford said. ?He?s very passionate and an excellent speaker, and he talks to our scientists about finding a cure much like he probably hopped up his football team in his speeches.?

On a daily basis, Crawford said he has been personally impacted by Notre Dame students, especially those who have joined the movement to find a cure for NPC through research and fundraising.?

?It?s been pretty incredible to interact with students by supporting them, having them support our efforts and, most importantly, learning from them,? he said.?

In recalling such meaningful life experiences and special people, Crawford said all are united by a common thread.?

?I really enjoyed [writing the book] and kind of putting it all together,? he said. ?There?s a lot of connections between the various chapters, but the underlying thing is the mission of Notre Dame, which is what brings people together.??

?The Education of a Notre Dame Science Dean? is available for sale at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore and through Corby Books. ?

Bridging Communication Boundaries Through a Common Vision ...

Refreshed conference format features joint Visionary Addresses and new tracks

SINGAPORE, 21 February 2013 - The much-anticipated annual conferences held at CommunicAsia, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia are back in a new format with a joint visionary address and a cross-industry C-level panel discussion encompassing the ICT, broadcasting, pro-audio, film and TV industries. More than 210 global thought leaders will provide fresh insights on the dissolving boundaries in the field of communications, from 18 to 21 June 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore.

Joint Visionary Address Will Unveil a Meeting of Minds
For the first time, delegates from both the CommunicAsia2013 Summit and BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference will be participating in a two-part visionary address on 19 June 2013. The first is the Governmental Visionary Address by the Minister for Technology, State Government of Victoria, Australia, The Hon. Gordon Rich-Phillips. This is followed by the Industry Visionary Address by Mr. Karim Temsamani, Head of Asia Pacific, Google.

Titled ?ICT enabled Government ? a new approach to buying and using ICT from Victoria, Australia?, the Governmental Visionary Address will discuss how the Victorian Government, through its recently released ICT Strategy, sets out on its roadmap to deliver better services, reduce waste, encourage innovation and improve ICT procurement across government. This will also highlight the intention of the strategy to help align processes across departments and set clear lines of governance, accountability and direction.

The Industry Visionary Address will highlight how the Asian consumer is pushing the world?s Internet to new directions. Over the next few years, Asia can expect to see millions of new mobile Internet users enter this booming market. These new consumers will approach the Internet with different needs and expectations, compared to their Western counterparts 10 years ago.

Mr. Karim Temsamani, Head of Asia Pacific, Google says, "Asians are digitising their lives at a faster pace than people in almost any other region and most of the new users to join the Internet over the next decade will come from Asia. Asia already dominates the market for smartphones. The challenge is to look beyond devices to focus on how Asians are rebuilding their businesses, societies and cultures on the Internet in ways that were unimaginable just three years ago. The challenge for businesses is to anticipate and accelerate these changes in Asia, which is coming to define the global Internet."

Business Leaders to Discuss Technological Convergence Challenges Ahead
As the link between broadcast technologies and telecom technologies gets stronger, and the overlap of technologies more evident, CommunicAsia2013 Summit and BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference have conceptualised a joint panel discussion that will draw professionals from both industries. The ?Thought-Leaders Panel? of C-level executives will bring together telco companies like global satellite operator MEASAT, as well as broadcast companies like multi-media and content creator, Media Prima Berhad, to identify opportunities for collaboration between the telecom and broadcast industries.

?Over the years, we have been seeing more aggressive convergence between the telecom and broadcasting industries. We decided to hold a joint Visionary Address and ?Thought-Leaders Panel? this year to fulfil the need for a common platform for inter-industry discussion. These joint sessions will encourage industry think-tanks, service providers and content creators, to develop strategies to maximise reach and make business sense for both sides of the spectrum,? says Ms. Lindy Wee, Director, PR & Conferences, Singapore Exhibition Services.

CommunicAsia2013 Summit: The Next Wave: The Future is the Empowered Customer
The refreshed CommunicAsia2013 Summit will have eight key tracks ? each track kicks off with a panel discussion ? and two interactive workshops. Consumers have rapidly become the game-changers in the industry, with their accelerated demand for mobile data and services. The four-day programme will highlight the importance of understanding the customer so that businesses can be prepared to deliver a superior experience. More than 110 speakers will share their views and discuss critical issues affecting the ICT industry.

Some of the key confirmed speakers include Thomas Clayton, CEO & President of Bubble Motion, Marc Overton, Vice President of Wholesale and Machine-to-Machine from EE, Sandra De Zoysa, Group Chief Customer Officer of Dialog Telecom PLC, Nigel Bruin, Director, NBN Competence Center, Business Consulting of Huawei Singapore, Michael Thatcher, CTO ? Asia , International Organizations from Microsoft Public Sector, John Garrett, President of Carrier Services from Pacnet, Wu Choy Peng, Group CIO of SingTel, David Chalmers, Executive Director (Asia Pacific) of Tata Communications, Martijn Blanken, Executive Director of Telstra Global, Liu Yali, Executive Director of International Network Planning from Verizon and many others.

BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference: Enhancing User Experience, Monetising Content
The BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference progresses to the next level with four new tracks, four specialised sessions and for the first time, a half day workshop. This will focus on the shift in consumer demand for high quality content on-the-go, on multiple platforms and the emerging business opportunities for OTT in Asia. More than 100 speakers from 31 countries/regions will lead the numerous discussions over four days.

Some of the key confirmed speakers include, Peter Hutton, Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, Dato Amrin Awaluddin, Group Managing Director, Media Prima Berhad, Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto, Kurt Hoppe, Director of Smart TV Innovation of LG Electronics, Benjamin Grubbs, APAC Head of Partner Marketing of YouTube and Jay Fulcher, CEO of Ooyala.

Bringing Content to Life on Exhibition Showfloors
Content for both conferences has been carefully designed to complement the various technologies that will be showcased on the exhibition floors of CommunicAsia2013, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia2013. Attendees will get to witness the latest services and solutions in broadband, cable, cloud, Interactive TV, mobile apps, OTT, satellite communications, multi-platform broadcasting, future TV, DVB-T2, professional audio technology, and more, Since the shows? inception, CommunicAsia, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia have been running together and are widely acknowledged as one of the world?s leading technology showcases.
