BABY AUCTION! ?Man sells only son for N350,000 to procure Greek ...

?Woman puts up her son for N300,000

baby sellersWonders, they say, shall never cease. In what seemed a bizarre, sale of babies is booming in Abia State, according to feelers from the police command which reeled out statistics at a briefing in Umuahia yesterday.

The Police Commissioner, Mr. Usman Tilli Abubakar, said that a 20-year-old father of one had sold his only son for N350,000 to enable him procure a Greek visa.

The suspect, Mr. Onyekachi Ekwelum, who resides at 13 B, Nwalozie Street, Aba, was reported to the police by his wife, Ozioma. The 20-year-old wife had sensed that her husband was up to some alleged evil plans when the man took his only son out only to return alone without the baby. The baby, Oluebubechukwu Ekwelum, who is barely six months old, was taken by his father to his buyers and left there.

When the man returned home, he could not explain the whereabouts of the child. Suspecting that something was amiss, his wife rushed to the police station and reported the incident.

The police swung into action and arrested the father of the child who took them to the buyers and the child was rescued. The child was handed over to the mother, the suspect has been arraigned.

But just as residents of Aba were trying to come to terms with the incident, a similar situation was playing out in another part of the state. In a similar development, a man, Oluchukwu, has accused his wife, Kelechi Amowse, 25, of conniving with a medical doctor to sell his baby boy for N300, 000.

The suspect, Dr Williams Oruwa, was arrested by the police after the woman?s husband, Oluchukwu of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area reported that the child who was just delivered by his wife, was missing. The suspects were picked up and have been charged to court.

During investigation, the police said they stumbled on three other pregnant women whom Dr Oruwa was allegedly harbouring in his hospital. It was said that he planned to sell the babies as soon as the girls were delivered of their babies.

The three female suspects are Blessing Okwu, 21, Janet Ogonna, 20 and Onuoha Chinenye 23. Also, on March 4, one Chidiebere Samuel of Ovurungwu Village in Isialangwa South LGA reported that his wife, Odinakachi Samuel, on February 26, delivered a baby girl and allgedly connived with one Monica Benjamin, who delivered her of the child, to sell the baby for N150, 000. The police also arrested the suspects and charged them to court at Umuahia.

The police also said they arrested a couple, who sold their new baby girl to a yet-to-be identified buyer for N200, 000. The suspects, (names withheld) are being held by the police to help them apprehend the buyer of the child. Abubarkar also told reporters at the command?s headquarters in Umuahia that the 42 days he had spent so far in the state have been a ?period of human recovery.

We rescued more than three babies, sold by their parents and accomplices and charged them to court,? he stated. In another development, Abubakar also warned kidnappers, armed robbers, drug traffickers, human traffickers, fraudsters and other criminals operating in the state to lay down their arms or face the full weight of the law.

He said that his mission is to ensure that residents sleep with their two eyes closed. I have recorded four kidnapping cases and three have been rescued and re-united with their family members without the payment of any ransom.

Among them are the kidnap of a three-year-old Master Law Chikwendu on March 17, 2013 and the abduction of the 72-year-old wife of one Prof. Eze, who was tied and kept in a bush. She was rescued by the police after they blocked the escape route of the kidnapper.

There is also the abduction of a man from Port Harcourt to Abia State. These and more are some of the achievements I have made within my 42 days in office,? the police boss noted.

Factories that ran on Korean cooperation go silent

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A factory complex that is North Korea's last major economic link with the South was a virtual ghost town Tuesday after Pyongyang suspended its operations and recalled all 53,000 of its workers, cutting off jobs and a source of hard currency in its war of words and provocations against Seoul and Washington.

Only a few hundred South Korean managers remain at the Kaesong industrial complex, which has been run with cheap North Korean labor and South Korean capital and know-how for the past decade. The managers have not been forced to leave the facility just north of the Demilitarized Zone.

One manager said Tuesday that he and his colleagues are subsisting on ramen but planned to stay and watch over the company's equipment as long as their food lasted.

Pyongyang said Monday it would recall all 53,000 North Korean workers from the complex and would decide later whether to shut it down for good. The work stoppage at the biggest employer in the North's third-biggest city shows that Pyongyang is willing to hurt its own shaky economy in order to display its anger with South Korea and the United States.

Pyongyang has unleashed a torrent of threats at Seoul and Washington following U.N. sanctions punishing the North for its third nuclear test, on Feb. 12, and joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea that allies call routine but that Pyongyang sees as invasion preparation.

U.S. and South Korean defense officials have said they've seen nothing to indicate that Pyongyang is preparing for a major military action that it would certainly lose. Analysts say North Korea's rhetoric and actions are intended to force new, Pyongyang-friendly policies in South Korea and Washington and to boost domestic loyalty for Kim Jong Un, the country's young, still relatively untested new leader.

The Kaesong complex is the last symbol of inter-Korean rapprochement projects from previous eras of cooperation. Other projects such as reunions of families separated by war and tours to a scenic North Korean mountain became stalled in recent years.

Kim Yang Gon, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, announced Monday on a visit to Kaesong that operations at the complex would be suspended. He said the facility has been "has been reduced to a theater of confrontation."

Kim said in a statement released by state media that North Korea will now consider whether to close the complex permanently. "How the situation will develop in the days ahead will entirely depend on the attitude" of South Korean authorities, it said. The message did not say what would happen to the more than 400 South Korean managers still at Kaesong.

Some North Koreans who worked overnight shifts at Kaesong were still there Tuesday morning, but South Koreans said those scheduled for day shifts didn't show. A North Korean woman at Kaesong said in a telephone call that she planned to return home now that her night shift was done.

One of the South Koreans who remained at Kaesong on Tuesday said he planned to stay there until food runs out. He said he and four other colleagues had been living on instant noodles.

"We haven't had any rice since last night. I miss rice," he said Tuesday morning. "We are running out of food. We will stay here until we run out of ramen."

In noting the shutdown, the U.S. referred to a Central Committee of the North's ruling Worker's Party statement a little more than a week ago, in which it described the economy as one of the nation's top two priorities. The other is building nuclear weapons.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said closing the complex "would be regrettable, given that more than 50,000 North Korean people are employed there, and it would not help them achieve their stated desire to improve their economy and better the lives of their people."

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which is responsible for relations with the North, issued a statement saying South Korea will act "calmly and firmly" and will make its best efforts to secure the safety of South Koreans at Kaesong.

North Korea has threatened to fire nuclear missiles at the U.S. and claimed it had scrapped the 1953 armistice that ended fighting in the Korean War. Last week it told foreign diplomats based in Pyongyang that it will not be able to guarantee their safety as of Wednesday. Embassy workers appeared to be staying put. There have also been worries in Seoul of an even larger provocation from Pyongyang, including another possible nuclear test or rocket launch.

The barrage of North Korean threats has made North Korea increasingly isolated. China, its most important ally, expressed unusual disappointment when Pyongyang announced last week that it was restarting a plutonium reactor to produce more nuclear-bomb fuel.

Even before Monday's announcement, Pyongyang had been allowing operations at the Kaeson complex to wither. Last month it cut the communications with South Korea that had helped regulate border crossings at Kaesong, and last week it barred South Korean workers and cargo from entering North Korea.

Operations had continued and South Koreans already at Kaesong were allowed to stay, but dwindling personnel and supplies had forced about a dozen of the more than 120 companies operating at Kaesong before North Koreans were told to stop working there.

North Korea briefly restricted the heavily fortified border crossing at Kaesong in 2009, but manufacturers fear the current closure could last longer.

South Korea's Unification Ministry estimates 53,000 North Korean workers in Kaesong received $80 million in salary in 2012, an average of $127 a month paid in U.S. dollars. The Unification Ministry says Kaesong accounted for nearly all two-way trade between the Koreas. Cross-border trade, including supplies entering Kaesong and finished products coming out, approached $2 billion annually.

North Korea objects to portrayals in the South of the zone being crucial to the impoverished country's finances. Kim said North Korea "gets few economic benefits from the zone while the south side largely benefits from it." North Korea has also expressed outrage over South Korean discussion of military rescue plans in the event Pyongyang held the managers hostage.

Networking Helps Small Business | Stuff.co.nz

The days of cold-calling for new clients are slowly fading with small-business owners increasingly turning to formal business networks to grow.

Small to medium enterprise (SME) owners say committing to a business network means they are able to spend more time on their core business and less on constantly marketing themselves and cold-calling prospective clients.

Daniel Hancock, owner of website designers Web Revolutions, said 35 per cent of the company's new business in the past year had come as a direct result of his membership in worldwide networking organisation Business Network International (BNI).

BNI has 132 chapters around the country.

Members meet weekly for a structured business meeting in which each member has an allocated time to speak about their business and offer client referrals to other members. Each chapter allows only one member per type of business.

Hancock said the key advantage of BNI membership was exposure to much wider business networks.

"You're not just relying on existing clients to refer you," he said. "Your net is cast a lot wider. You're exposed to other business people who work in wide range of businesses - lawyers, accountants, landscape designers, drainlayers - and they know you and trust you, so they're happy to recommend you to their clients," he said.

BNI marketing manager Colin Kennedy said New Zealand consistently won highest market penetration compared with other countries.

"The way we work in New Zealand just about everything is done by word of mouth," he said.

"I think New Zealanders are really relationship-focussed in how they do business.

"The thing about networking is it allows you to meet not only like-minded business owners, but it generates business."

Tauranga businesswoman Vanessa Davey launched the women's business network Venus in 2008 not long after launching her own small business, The Clutter Coach.

"I had gone from working in a team to working from home," she said. "Suddenly you're working in isolation, which takes a lot of getting used to, and I realised I had no idea how to go about marketing my business."

Realising there must be many women running home-based businesses and facing the same issues, she started Venus, which now has more than 30 chapters nationwide.

Rebecca Snow, who runs Auckland home-based business Vanilla Administration, says the boost in client numbers for her company was an unexpected bonus of joining Venus.

"I joined because I wanted to reach out to other women working on their own at home," she said. I wasn't particularly looking for new business but it's been an effective way of finding it.

"It works because you're meeting with a group of women you trust and if they refer someone to you, you're going to work really hard to do the same for them."

Snow said she was now about to expand her business.

GOP dismayed governor doesn't like education bill

SEATTLE (AP) ? Although he endorsed the idea during his campaign, Gov. Jay Inslee is now saying a Republican legislative proposal to give letter grades to public schools is flawed and he doesn't support it.

The Seattle Times (http://is.gd/X6Zhci ) reports the Democratic governor's opposition to Senate Bill 5328 has surprised and disappointed Republican leaders.

But a spokesman for the governor says they shouldn't be surprised. Jaime Smith reports the governor's chief of staff met with Sen. Steve Litzow earlier in the legislative session to express concerns about the school grading bill.

Smith says Inslee is still interested in setting up an A-F grading system for schools. But the details are important. He wants to make sure Washington uses the right criteria, gets stakeholder input and gives schools enough time to prepare.

Sources Say Next Xbox Requires Always-On ... - Game Informer

[Update] Microsoft has released a new statement, which apologizes for the comments made on Twitter yesterday.

This new statement was released by official Xbox blogger Major Nelson. Here is the statement in full:

"We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers.? We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

[Update] We received an official statement from Microsoft, via the company's PR firm Edelman, concerning the tweets sent by Microsoft Studios' creative director Adam Orth last evening.

The statement reads as follows:

"We are aware of the comments made by an employee on Twitter. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views are not reflective of those of the company.??We have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

[Update]?The Microsoft employee whose tweets ignited more speculation about an always-online console future has made his Twitter account private. Meanwhile, the BioWare employee who engaged in that initial Twitter exchange is defending his friend's comments.

"The initial comments are what they are and he has to answer that, but the 'why would I live there' stuff was him trolling me," wrote Manveer Heir, senior gameplay designer at BioWare, in tweets to Destructoid's Jim Sterling. "We're good friends and he was busting balls, forgetting it was online and public. Doesn't forgive the original sentiment at all."

As Sterling pointed out in his story about the tweets and the back and forth, the bits about cities weren't what made Microsoft creative director Adam Orth's posts seem so tone deaf.?

[Update] A user on the NeoGAF messageboard has found tweets from the creative director of Microsoft Studios that seem to reinforce the rumors of an always-on Internet gaming console.

This news comes via the gaming site StickSkills, which spotted the posts on NeoGAF. In the posts, Microsoft Studios' creative director Adam Orth posts a series of tweets that seems to defend the idea of an always-on connected console ? and also seems to make fun of those gamers who have a problem with it. The tweets are below and speak for themselves.

[Original Story]

A new report corroborates earlier rumors which state that the next Xbox console will require an "always-on" Internet connection ? and will require you to be online in order to load games.

Kotaku ran a report today that cited multiple anonymous sources who stated that gamers would have to have their console connected and logged into Microsoft's network in order to use games and apps.

One source cited in the article said, "Unless something has changed recently, Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used. If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started. If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time ? currently three minutes, if I remember correctly ? the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

The rumors that the next Xbox will be online-only have been persistent, so it's likely that this is Microsoft's plan ? or at least was the plan at some point during the development.

For more, read the original story on Kotaku.
