Dreamliner fire not caused by battery fault, says U.K. agency

LONDON (AP) ? A fire on an empty Boeing 787 plane at London's Heathrow Airport didn't appear to be caused by faulty aircraft batteries, a British investigative agency said Saturday.

Investors in Boeing, which calls its newest plane a Dreamliner, had feared that Friday's blaze meant that a battery overheating problem that grounded the whole fleet of such planes in January had not been fixed. News of the fire on the Ethiopian Airlines plane sent Boeing shares down 4.7 percent on Friday.

But Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said there was "no evidence of a direct causal relationship" between the Dreamliner's batteries and the fire.

"There has been extensive heat damage in the upper portion of the rear fuselage, a complex part of the aircraft ... it is clear that this heat damage is remote from the area in which the aircraft main and APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) batteries are located," the agency said in a statement.

Ethiopian Airlines said it is continuing to operate its fleet of 787s despite the investigation, which will take at least several more days to be completed.

The airline's chief executive, Tewolde Gebremariam, told The Associated Press on Saturday that there is "no flight safety issue" with the 787s and that Ethiopian Airlines, like other operators, hasn't made changes regarding the planes.

Friday's fire broke out more than eight hours after the plane landed at Heathrow Airport. The aircraft was parked on a remote parking stand with no one onboard when smoke was detected from it, Ethiopian Airlines said.

Although the incident caused no injuries, it forced Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, to close its runways for nearly an hour. Arrivals and departures were briefly suspended, delaying hundreds of passengers' journeys.

The fire also drew renewed attention to the future of Boeing's most technologically-advanced airliner. Boeing, based in Chicago, marketed the 787 as a revolutionary jet which burns 20 percent less fuel than comparable aircraft, thanks to its lightweight design.

In another first, the plane relies on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to start its auxiliary power unit, which provides power on the ground or if the main engines quit. But problems with those batteries led to the grounding earlier this year of the 50 Dreamliners flying at the time.

In January, the Dreamliner was grounded for months following two incidents relating to overheating lithium-ion batteries on separate planes. One 787 caught fire shortly after it landed at Boston's Logan International Airport on Jan. 7.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration eventually approved a plan by Boeing to better insulate the battery's eight cells and the addition of a new containment and venting system. Once the changes were made, the planes started to fly again.

Ethiopian Airlines was the first airline to resume using the 787, with a flight on April 27 from Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya.

The airline is helping with the investigation of Friday's fire, together with Boeing, Britain's AAIB, the FAA and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

Union Berlin 3 - 0 Celtic: Lennon?s men lose again

JUST five days before their first competitive match of the season in the all-important Champions League qualifier against Cliftonville in Belfast, Celtic have not recorded a victory in their pre-season programme.

Scorers: Terodde 12, Brandy 55, Kreilach 87

A 3-0 defeat by German second division side Union Berlin will not go down well with their supporters, but there were at least some encouraging signs that their heroes are becoming more match sharp by the game. Add in the fine displays by youngsters Jackson Irvine, Tom Rogic and Mikey Miller and manager Neil Lennon will not have been too disappointed with the night?s work.

Lennon?s men had not won a match on their pre-season Continental tour before last night. Sevastapol of the Ukraine, Romanian side Cluj and another German second division outfit, Greuther Furth, had all taken the scalp of the Scottish champions, the latter putting six goals past a very shaky Celtic defence.

Celtic never really looked like correcting that record last night in a match to mark the opening of the main stand and official completion of Union Berlin?s An der Alten Forsterei stadium. That?s a remarkable story in itself, since thousands of fans worked unpaid on the project, and a raucous capacity crowd of just over 18,000 created an atmosphere which in itself made the match much more competitive than most friendlies.

After a couple of early corners to the home side, and with Celtic making absolutely no headway up front, Union took an 11th-minute lead, the chief surprise being that Fraser Forster, easily the man of the tour hitherto, completely misinterpreted the flight of Simon Terodde?s superbly struck snapshot volley from the edge of the box. Kelvin Wilson could have put more pressure on the scorer, but take nothing away from the goalscorer as it was a class effort.

The goal sparked a reaction from Celtic in that they became more composed and organised, captain Scott Brown?s return ensuring that the midfield was at least combative. How they will miss Victor Wanyama in that department, the big fellow?s absence an obvious loss in this pre-season tour.

At the back, Irvine and Wilson formed a solid partnership, the 20-year-old Australian looking very composed on the ball, as did the other Aussie in the team, midfielder Tom Rogic.

After 24 minutes, Forster kept his eye firmly on another volley, this time a spectacular effort by Martin Dausch off a knockdown by Soren Brandy, and the goalkeeper parried the ball away firmly.

Celtic had not had a shot on goal in the first half hour when Kris Commons won a corner, taking it himself and finding Giorgios Samaras whose effort was turned away.

Towards the end of the half, Celtic began to exert considerable pressure on their well-organised and technically sound hosts, and after Fabian Schonheim headed just over his own bar, Mikael Lustig headed the resultant corner narrowly wide.

At half time, Celtic sent on youngster Mikey Miller in place of Mikael Lustig at right-back, and more substitutions unsettled the side later on, but Lennon had said he would use these games to get players fit and to experiment, and he has stuck to the plan.

Ten minutes into a Celtic-dominated second half, a sucker punch gave Union a second goal. The SPL champions looked to have cleared the danger but the ball was knocked back in over the heads of a static defence and Soren Brandy reacted first to knock the ball past Forster.

After Irvine was booked for a foul in which television replays showed he made no contact, Marc Pfertzel looked to have put Union further ahead but he was correctly adjudged to have been offside.

Celtic searched constantly for a way back into the game, and Anthony Stokes had a shot deflected wide on 64 minutes before Irvine?s goalbound header from the corner was punched away by Daniel Haas.

Stokes? 68th minute shot was saved by Haas before Rogic fired one just wide from distance. Union were content to soak up the pressure and hit on the break, and three minutes from time they gained a third with the Celtic defence again caught napping, Damir Kreilach heading home Dausch?s pinpoint cross.

It will perhaps worry Lennon that his side is conceding an average of three goals a game, but if he gets it right against Cliftonville, all will be forgiven and forgotten.

Vatican freezes assets of arrested monsignor

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican has frozen the assets of a monsignor who was arrested in a plot to smuggle 20 million euro ($26 million) into Italy and warned Friday that other people may be caught up in the investigation.

The Vatican's chief prosecutor on July 9 froze the accounts at the Vatican bank of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, who was arrested by Italian authorities June 28 on accusations of corruption and slander. Scarano allegedly plotted to bring 20 million euro into Italy from Switzerland in July of last year aboard a private jet to avoid declaring it at customs.

Prosecutors say the money was believed to have belonged to friends of Scarano, members of the d'Amico shipping family. Scarano has reportedly told prosecutors he stood to gain 2.5 million euro in commission for the operation.

A judge has refused to grant him house arrest; he remains at Rome's Queen of Heaven prison.

In a statement Friday, the Vatican said its own investigation into Scarano was triggered by several reports of suspicious transactions filed with the Vatican's financial watchdog agency. It said its probe "could be extended to additional individuals."

Italian prosecutors have said Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in the Vatican's main finance office, had two accounts at the Vatican bank: One was his personal account and another one, named "Fondo Anziani" was purportedly used to receive charitable donations. The amount frozen wasn't believed to be anything near the 20 million involved in the smuggling plot.

In addition to the money-smuggling case, Scarano is also under investigation by prosecutors in his hometown of Salerno for allegedly taking 560,000 euros ($729,000) in cash out of his Vatican account in 2009 and carrying it into Italy to help pay off a mortgage on his Salerno home. He used a complicated scheme to give dozens of friends 10,000 in cash in exchange for checks, made out to be donations, that he then deposited in an Italian bank account.

The money had come into Scarano's Vatican bank account from donors who gave it to the prelate thinking they were funding a home for the terminally ill in Salerno that was never built, Scarano's lawyer Silverio Sica has said. Prosecutor Nello Rossi has said the donors included the d'Amicos. The family has denied wrongdoing and says it is cooperating with authorities.

Pope Francis has zeroed in on the Vatican bank, the Institute for Works of Religion, as the first phase of his reform of the Vatican bureaucracy. This week he attended the inaugural session of a commission of inquiry he formed to look into the IOR's activities. The Vatican newspaper said Francis personally attended "to encourage the commission's work."

Foreclosures are Down and Seattle's Housing ... - RealEstate.com

Foreclosure Filings Down

Foreclosure filings, a key measure of the housing industry?s health, slipped to a 6.5-year low in June, another indication that the market is gaining strength and recovery is well underway.

A RealtyTrac report said 127,790 homes had foreclosure filings last month. That?s 14 percent down from the May numbers. Compared to the year-ago period, numbers are down 35 percent.

The housing market in Seattle, Washington is very competitive thanks to business growth along with low inventory and mortgage ratesThat?s the lowest since December 2006.

The good news doesn?t end there. Fewer homes entered the foreclosure process and lenders seized fewer homes, which means the future pipeline of foreclosures is also on the decline. Banks possessed 248,538 homes in the first half of the year. If the numbers follow the trend, by the year?s end foreclosures would be around 500,000. That?s below 671,000 foreclosure properties the previous year.

?We are getting tantalizingly close to being back to normal, healthy foreclosure levels, at least on a nationwide basis,? Daren Blomquist, vice president at RealtyTrac, told Reuters.

Foreclosures have been the biggest curse on the once thriving housing market. A faltering economy and rising unemployment hit consumers hard, disabling them from making their monthly mortgage payments and increasing foreclosures. The influx of such properties increased the inventory in the marketplace, thereby dragging down home prices. As the number of foreclosed homes grew, builders, sellers and buyers became anxious. Things have been steadily on the mend as the economy began improving, and interest rates continued staying low. This week?s report from RealtyTrac provides a helpful boost to consumer and builder confidence. The last year has been a good year for the industry. Home prices are up and so are sales.

According to RealtyTrac, 34 states saw a decline in repossessions in June compared to a year ago. But, there are still some states ? such as Oklahoma, Maryland and Arkansas ? that saw significant gains. So, although we are on the right track, we still have a long road ahead.

Seattle?s Housing Market is Sizzling Hot

Seattle is one of the most competitive housing markets in the country thanks to low interest rates and depleting inventory, according to King5.com

?Seattle is just crazy bonkers. Most of our listings are going in 30 days,? Al Uyeno, a local real estate agent, told the news website.

Uyeno said that the declining unemployment rate and increasing hiring has helped increase the number of buyers in a tight market.

?We?ve got Amazon, we?ve got Boeing, we?ve got Microsoft all hiring, and all these people are coming here from out of state so they have to have some place to live,? ?Uyeno said.

Real estate agents say that good homes are selling fast, and at high prices. In some areas, the median price for homes is up as much as 14 percent.

Mortgage Rates Touch Two-Year High

Beware buyers. Mortgage rates are again inching upward. So, if you want to lock into some low, lucrative rates, you may want to get in the game now.

The average rate on the 30-year loans skyrocketed to 4.51 percent this week. Last week it was 4.29 percent, according the mortgage giant Freddie Mac, who tracks rate changes. Two months ago the rate was 3.35 percent, just a tad above the all-time low of 3.31 percent.

Rates on the shorter-term loans are also on the upswing. The average rate on 15-year loans jumped to 3.53 percent from 3.39 percent a week ago. That?s the biggest increase since August 2011.

Rates have been at historic lows for a while now and began inching upward because of expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut down its bond buying this year. The continued low rates have helped encourage buyers to jump into the market. Despite the increases this week, rates continue to be low. But not everyone can qualify for the lucrative rates. Lenders have installed a tight screening process. Only consumers with a clean credit record and sizeable down payment generally have access to the lucrative rates.

Even with the gains, mortgage rates remain low by historical standards. Low rates have helped fuel a housing recovery that is helping to drive economic growth this year.

Review: Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville offers plenty of fun ...

margaritavilleblog
I?ve always said that I don?t really understand the Parrothead phenomenon that hits Cincinnati every time Jimmy Buffett comes to town and sells out Riverbend, as he is doing once again on Tuesday.

But when I consider it, there?s nothing that hard to understand. Let?s just say it?s a little more enthusiasm than I would show, but the combination of Buffet?s good-time music in an atmosphere that re-creates a beach vacation with margaritas, beer, beach balls, Hawaiian shirts and more margaritas is an undeniably fun package.

And packaged it is. Buffett-o-mania has launched not only countless tours, but restaurants, bars, gift shops, a liquor label and a clothing line. As a Parrothead capital, it?s only right that the package should come here. Now it has, with Margaritaville in the Horseshoe Casino, Downtown. It?s a place for reminiscing about past concerts or vacations, or taking a frivolous break from the serious business of gambling.

There?s no mistaking the theme. Nautical charts on the ceiling ? from which a seaplane is suspended ? palm trees, a bar shack with corrugated metal roof, and stilt walkers dressed in pirate outfits tying up balloon animals. Buffett videos play. The restaurant is one of a couple at the casino that can be entered directly from the street. If you park in the casino garage, you do have to walk all the way through the gambling floor. There are big windows and a nice outdoor dining area.

I ordered a margarita. Obviously. There are several on the menu. I went with the ?perfect,? ($9.50) and it was pretty good. The other tropical drinks are, as they should be, cold and fruity.

We had been ogling the nachos ($13.99) at other people?s tables as we walked in. They come piled high ? really high ? on the plate. We decided not to tackle them, but all evening we watched them come out of the kitchen over and over, and then watched them taken back in, shortened by just a few inches. Wretched excess has its place, as Parrotheads know, but it seemed tacky and wrong to me to serve all that food that no one could eat.

It took quite a while for the appetizers we did order to show up. We had the crab, shrimp and mushroom dip ($11.99) which was just OK, with a thick blanket of cheese. The peel and eat shrimp ($11.99), which came out of a spicy boil, were firm and tasty, and the best things we had all evening. After that first wait for a server, he was prompt and did a good job.

The jambalaya ($15.99) was packed with sausage, shrimp and chicken, in a thick spicy sauce on top of rice ? fairly spicy but not that interesting.

The catch of the day was catfish, which was unbelievably bland, even with a mango-pineapple salsa on the side. There was a hard-to-identify sauce in a small cup, which turned out to be a garlic sauce, I think, which didn?t help much either.

The teriyaki sirloin ($18.59) was not bad at all, tender and cooked just a little under the medium my friend ordered, and the teriyaki sauce wasn?t overwhelming. I would not have served it with mashed potatoes, though, and it wasn?t a good idea to serve mashed potatoes with an ice cream scoop. It makes them more reminiscent of a school cafeteria than a beach shack.

More excess for dessert: the chocolate hurricane ($6.99) is a huge hot fudge sundae. Like many such concoctions, it didn?t have enough chocolate sauce so ended up being a big dessert of vanilla ice cream and redundant whipped cream. We barely made a dent. The rest went back to the kitchen.

Wastin? away again in Margaritaville.

iPhone 5S set to get 120fps high-speed video mode

A new feature buried in the code for Apple's latest iOS 7 beta has hinted at the possibility of a new feature for the upcoming iPhone 5S - the ability to record high-speed video.

According to 9to5Mac, the feature is hidden in iOS 7 and not usable on current-generation handsets. It provides the software layer for a camera system that can record at 120 frames per second - four times faster than the 30 frames per second used by current iPhone models.

The iPhone 5S is already rumoured to include numerous camera improvements, including a second LED flash for improved low-light photography and a high-resolution 13-megapixel sensor. The introduction of high frame rate video seems likely, especially as one of Apple's biggest competitors, the Samsung Galaxy S4, already includes a 120 frames per second high-speed video mode.

The iPhone 5S is expected to launch later this year, possibly alongside a less expensive iPhone Lite, which is expected to use a polycarbonate plastic casing. Rumoured specifications include a larger and higher-resolution display, faster A7 processor and a fingerprint sensor. Apple, for its part, has refused to confirm or deny any of the rumours surrounding its unannounced products.
