LG Optimus Elite gets photographed, decked out in Sprint and Virgin livery
Not a fan of that 5-inch, IPS display on the Optimus Vu? Perhaps, you'd be more interested in a smaller, lesser-specced member of the family. According to PocketNow, the Optimus Elite is sprinting its way toward The Now Network and Virgin Mobile, with an expected launch on the former "rather soon" and the latter as early as May. The Elite is allegedly packing some run-of-the-mill features, including a 3.5-inch, HVGA screen alongside a five-megapixel rear shooter and an 800Mhz CPU. Both flavors look identical, save for Virgin's prepaid flavor going with a darker look, which you can gander at by jumping past the break.

vance - Trading Ideas: Brightcove (BCOV) Set To Benefit From Video

Online video platform provider Brightcove, Inc. (NASDAQ:BCOV) is well positioned to benefit from the changing manner of video consumption, evolution of video content on the Internet, proliferation of high speed Internet access, emergence of social media, and an increasing number of different mobile devices.

Brightcove offers Video Cloud, an online video platform that enables its customers to publish and distribute video to Internet-connected devices. The company's Video Cloud platform offers various features and functionalities such as uploading and encoding, content management, video players, live video streaming, distribution and syndication, social media, advertising and monetization, and integrated video analytics.

According to Cisco, internet video represents about 40 percent of consumer internet traffic and is expected to grow to about 60 percent by 2015. The increase is driven by the rapid adoption of smartphones and tablets, higher connection speeds, lower creation costs as well as the rich?consumer experience offered through video.

During 2011, Brightcove's customers delivered and average of approximately 743 million video streams per month with its Video Cloud platform.

"In our opinion, the Brightcove Video Cloud does a better job of organization and categorizing video content and driving that content across Web sites and devices compared to free video sharing sites, in-house solutions and other online video platform players," RBC Capital Markets analyst Robert Breza wrote in a note to clients.

Brightcove started trading Feb.17 on the Nasdaq. The company sees a sizable growth opportunity at more than $5.8 billion by 2015 at a CAGR of 26 percent from 2011.

In terms of business model, Brightcove prices its products on a subscription basis or as software as a service (SaaS) as it lowers the upfront risk of deploying an in-house, perpetual-based software license solution on top of either new or existing hardware.

The robustness of the product and subscription model has built a highly diversified customer base of over 3,872 in 50 different countries which represents less than 1 percent of potential customers.

"We believe that when corporations weigh the costs and complexities of building a video content distribution platform and the numerous shortcomings of video-sharing Web sites, they are likely to realize that turning to an outside video content distribution platform provider, such as Brightcove, makes the most sense for their video libraries," Breza noted.

The analyst noted that the company has high customer retention as the recurring dollar? rate has been in excess of 93 percent in each quarter of 2011, and trended above 86 percent in each quarter of 2010.

In addition, Brightcove has significant international operations and presence for a company of its size and maturity. During 2011, more than half of all Video Cloud video streams were to international locations. In 2011, the company generated approximately 34 percent of its revenue from customers located outside of North America, up from 32 percent in 2010.

"We expect the current and additional international opportunities to represent a significant area of growth and to trend toward a 50/50% mix over the long term," the analyst said.

Brightcove's total revenue has progressed from $8.5 million in 2007 to $24.5 million, $36.2 million, and $43.7 million in 2008, 2009, and 2010, respectively. Revenue in 2011 totaled approximately $63.6 million, which reflects a year-over-year growth rate of approximately 46 percent.

Breza expects about 21 percent growth in 2012 and believe the company can accelerate its revenue growth rate to approximately 32 percent in 2013.

"Given the early stage of its growth profile, Brightcove has yet to turn a profit, but we estimate that should change over the next several years as the company ramps up and scales against its expense base," said Breza, who has an "outperform" rating on Brightcove shares.

South Sudan official says Sudan bombs oil field

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? Sudan's military bombed an oil field in South Sudan on Tuesday, a South Sudan official said, as a dangerous flare-up in border violence appeared to scuttle plans for a presidential summit between the two countries.

Unity State Minister of Information Gideon Gatpan said Sudan dropped at least three bombs near oil fields in the town of Bentiu. Gatpan said the extent of any damage wasn't immediately known.

The attack comes one day after Sudan and South Sudan clashed in the disputed border town of Jau, prompting Sudan to cancel President Omar al-Bashir's trip to meet with South Sudan President Salva Kiir next week.

South Sudan broke away from Sudan last year, but tensions between the longtime foes have remained high.

Among the unresolved issues is the demarcation of the border and an agreement to share oil revenue. South Sudan earlier this year stopped pumping oil because it said Sudan ? which owns the pipelines the south's oil must travel through ? was stealing its oil.

Despite the increased violence, South Sudan held out hope the presidential meeting could still happen. South Sudan Minister of Information Barnaba Benjamin Marial said the south still expects al-Bashir to attend the meeting next week, saying South Sudan had not received an official cancellation from Khartoum.

Marial said the south believes that "forces of war" in Khartoum were trying to derail the peace process, but not al-Bashir himself. He said the south would not take the bait.

"Our president has said clearly we will not be dragged into a senseless war," Marial said. "We will not be dragged into a conflict with Sudan."

The two countries disputed which side was the aggressor in Monday's clash in Jau.

Marial said that Sudanese troops "without any provocation" bombed Jau on Monday afternoon before Sudanese ground forces and militia fighters moved in. Marial said that South Sudan troops repulsed the "invading forces" back to the town of Heglig, Sudan. Marial had no information on troop numbers involved or casualty figures.

Sudanese authorities say South Sudan started the fight.

"These attacks are the responsibility of the SPLA and the South Sudanese government," Sudanese Second Vice President Alhaj Adam Yousif said during an address on Sudanese state television late Monday. "The SPLA attacks have targeted our oil and our army." The SPLA is an acronym for South Sudan's military.

Sudan said that the Darfur-based rebel group Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, fought alongside the SPLA during Monday's clash.

The border violence continued into Tuesday near Benitu, Gatpan said.

"They are hovering and dropping over the northern part of town in the oil fields, the main Unity oil fields," Gatpan said. He said teams were being sent to the oil fields to assess the damage.

Yousif said that given Monday's violence, the presidential visit to sign agreements recently reached in Ethiopia would not happen.

"The visit of President Bashir was tied to good neighborly relations," said Yousif. "There is no way for this summit to take place now."

The cancellation of the summit effectively halts momentum in negotiations between the two countries on issues leftover from a 2005 peace deal that saw South Sudan separate from Sudan last July.

Oil has been the biggest disagreement. The row prompted South Sudan to shut down its oil production in late January, depriving both countries of a critical revenue stream.

Talks were stalled until two weeks ago when the two sides reached an agreement on citizenship and border demarcation. The agreements ? meant to be signed next Tuesday ? were seen as positive steps.

But there were early signs the deal might not hold. Both countries have accused each other of supporting rebel groups on either side of the border, though both sides deny the allegations.

Sudan's Minister of Defense Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein recently said that any rebel activity in Sudan's South Kordofan state could cancel the agreements. Sudan is battling the rebel SPLM-North, which until South Sudan's secession was linked to the south's ruling party ? the SPLA. The south has said it is not supporting the SPLM-North.

The cancellation of the presidential summit will set north-south relations back, said Aly Verjee, an analyst for the Rift Valley Institute.

"The new fighting unfortunately trumps progress made in recent negotiations. It is unsurprising that talks have been canceled given those events," he said.

Marial said South Sudan is still committed to the presidential summit.

"Our invitation still stands as it is. These are forces within the (ruling) NCP party which don't want this process to continue," he said.

The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that it fears for the safety of refugees who have fled the fighting in South Sudan after the violence flared up in recent days. Spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said more than 16,000 people who have fled the Nuba mountains in Sudan are currently living in South Sudan's Yida settlement.

She said the agency wants to move the refugees away from the border where the fighting is taking place.

In total, more than 105,000 Sudanese have fled to South Sudan and 30,000 have fled to Ethiopia.

World's largest telescope underway, scientists definitely observe big bang

Image
Once again astronomers are observing formative explosions, but this time a little bit closer to home. Three million cubic feet of planet earth is being blasted from the Chilean Andes as work on what will be the world's largest telescope begins. The location is the Carnegie Institution's Las Campanas Observatory, and the project is a collaboration between South Korean, Australian and American institutions to create the Giant Magellan Telescope. The first mirror segment is just being completed, and is so precise, it matches its optical prescription to within a millionth of an inch. The project will cost $700 million once complete, small change we say for a chance to glimpse light from the edge of the Universe.

Scientists reprogram cancer cells with low doses of epigenetic drugs

Friday, March 23, 2012

Experimenting with cells in culture, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have breathed possible new life into two drugs once considered too toxic for human cancer treatment. The drugs, azacitidine (AZA) and decitabine (DAC), are epigenetic-targeted drugs and work to correct cancer-causing alterations that modify DNA.

The researchers said the drugs also were found to take aim at a small but dangerous subpopulation of self-renewing cells, sometimes referred to as cancer stem cells, which evade most cancer drugs and cause recurrence and spread.

In a report published in the March 20, 2012, issue of Cancer Cell, the Johns Hopkins team said their study provides evidence that low doses of the drugs tested on cell cultures cause antitumor responses in breast, lung, and colon cancers.

Conventional chemotherapy agents work by indiscriminately poisoning and killing rapidly-dividing cells, including cancer cells, by damaging cellular machinery and DNA. "In contrast, low doses of AZA and DAC may re-activate genes that stop cancer growth without causing immediate cell-killing or DNA damage," says Stephen Baylin, M.D., Ludwig Professor of Oncology and deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

Many cancer experts had abandoned AZA and DAC for the treatment of common cancers, according to the researchers, because they are toxic to normal cells at standard high doses, and there was little research showing how they might work for cancer in general. Baylin and his colleague Cynthia Zahnow, Ph.D., decided to take another look at the drugs after low doses of the drugs showed a benefit in patients with a pre-leukemic disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Johns Hopkins investigators also showed benefit of low doses of the drugs in tests with a small number of advanced lung cancer patients. "This is contrary to the way we usually do things in cancer research," says Baylin, noting that "typically, we start in the laboratory and progress to clinical trials. In this case, we saw results in clinical trials that made us go back to the laboratory to figure out how to move the therapy forward."

For the research, Baylin and Zahnow's team worked with leukemia, breast, and other cancer cell lines and human tumor samples using the lowest possible doses that were effective against the cancers. In all, the investigators studied six leukemia cell lines, seven leukemia patient samples, three breast cancer cell lines, seven breast tumor samples (including four samples of tumors that had spread to the lung), one lung cancer tumor sample, and one colon cancer tumor sample. The team treated cell lines and tumor cells with low-dose AZA and DAC in culture for three days and allowed the drug-treated cells to rest for a week. Treated cells and tumor samples were then transplanted into mice where the researchers observed continued antitumor responses for up to 20 weeks. This extended response was in line with observations in some MDS patients who continued to have anticancer effects long after stopping the drug.

The low-dose therapy reversed cancer cell gene pathways, including those controlling cell cycle, cell repair, cell maturation, cell differentiation, immune cell interaction, and cell death. Effects varied among individual tumor cells, but the scientists generally saw that cancer cells reverted to a more normal state and eventually died. These results were caused, in part, by alteration of the epigenetic, or chemical environment, of DNA. Epigenetic activities turn on certain genes and block others, says Zahnow, assistant professor of oncology and the Evelyn Grolman Glick Scholar at Johns Hopkins.

The research team also tested AZA and DAC's effect on a type of metastatic breast cancer cell thought to drive cancer growth and resist standard therapies. Metastatic cells are difficult to study in standard laboratory tumor models, because they tend to break away from the original tumor and float around in blood and lymph fluids. The Johns Hopkins team re-created the metastatic stem cells' environment, allowing them to grow as floating spheres. "These cells were growing well as spheres in suspension, but when we treated the cells with AZA, both the size and number of spheres were dramatically reduced," says Zahnow.

The precise mechanism of how the drugs work is the focus of ongoing studies by Baylin and his team. "Our findings match evidence from recent clinical trials suggesting that the drugs shrink tumors more slowly over time as they repair altered mechanisms in cells and genes return to normal function and the cells may eventually die," says Baylin.

The results of clinical trials in lung cancer, led by Johns Hopkins' Charles Rudin, M.D., and published late last year in Cancer Discovery, also indicate that the drugs make tumors more responsive to standard anticancer drug treatment. This means, they say, that the drugs could become part of a combined treatment approach rather than a stand-alone therapy and as part of personalized approaches in patients whose cancers fit specific epigenetic and genetic profiles.

Low doses of both drugs are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of MDS and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). Clinical trials in breast and lung cancer have begun in patients with advanced disease, and trials in colon cancer are planned.

In addition to Baylin and Zahnow, other investigators participating in this study include Hsing-Chen Tsai, Huili Li, Leander Van Neste, Yi Cai, Carine Robert, Feyruz V. Rassool, James J. Shin, Kirsten M. Harbom, Robert Beaty, Emmanouil Pappou, James Harris, Ray-Whay Chiu Yen, Nita Ahuja, Malcolm V. Brock, Vered Stearns, David Feller-Kopman, Lonny B. Yarmus, Yi-Chun Lin, Alana L. Welm, Jean-Pierre Issa, Il Minn, William Matsui, Yoon-Young Jang, and Saul J. Sharkis.

The research was funded by a SPORE grant for lung cancer from the National Institutes of Health, the Hodson Trust Foundation, Entertainment Industry Foundation, Lee Jeans, Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program, Huntsman Cancer Foundation, and the Cindy Rosencrans Fund for Triple Negative Breast Cancer Research. All of the studies have been accelerated by funding from the Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) project in partnership with the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR).

Iran sanctions bring unintended, unwanted results

LONDON (Reuters) - Western sanctions have so far failed to deter Iran from pursuing its nuclear program and their unexpected and unintended side-effects are producing a new collection of challenges.

The expected loss of Iranian crude production has helped push oil prices to levels seen threatening the global economy.

Already Iran's oil exports appear to have fallen this month by some 300,000 barrels per day (bpd), or 14 percent, the first sizeable drop in shipments this year, according to estimates from industry consultant Petrologistics and an oil company.

Oil rose sharply on the news, with Brent jumping to over $127 a barrel, up almost $4 from the day's low.

Meanwhile, many Iran-watchers, including some Western officials, worry that far from producing compliance, ratcheting up the economic pressure is making the Islamic Republic more volatile, unpredictable and perhaps dangerous.

The United States and the European Union have introduced several new rounds of sanctions this year on oil and wider financial activity including targeting the Iranian central bank.

While Tehran says its atomic work is purely peaceful, Israel and Western nations believe it is moving towards a nuclear bomb that could change the regional balance of power.

"The sanctions are having an effect - it's just not the effect they were supposed to have," says Dina Esfandiary, a research analyst and specialist on Iran at London's International Institute for Strategic Studies.

"Sanctions are not exerting the desired influence on the regime. If anything, they may be making them more committed."

While Iranians may bear the brunt of the economic pain, people around the world are also feeling the knock-on effects of rising fuel prices that also drive food and price inflation.

Coming alongside heightened speculation and rhetoric over a potential Israeli military attack on Iran, the sanctions have helped push oil prices up by around 15 percent this year, although they have fallen back somewhat in recent weeks.

GLOBAL "CATCH-22"

Britain and the United States, it seems, were sufficiently worried to begin to release fuel from usually locked strategic reserves. But many other countries, including much of Western Europe, have yet to follow, perhaps nervous of letting stocks dwindle while the risk of a wider Gulf conflict remains.

Some see little choice, particularly for U.S. President Barack Obama in an election year. Robust Western sanctions, they say, are key to keeping Israel from staging a military strike.

"The sanctions are a real Catch-22 for the global community" says Hayat Alvi, associate professor of Middle Eastern studies at the U.S. Naval War College. "Given global interdependence, many fragile economies and their valuable recoveries will be hard hit...We're already starting to see some of the effects."

Asian powers such as China and India have already broadly signaled opposition to tighter sanctions, although Western diplomats say they may yet be persuaded. Despite promises by long-time Iranian foe Saudi Arabia to it would make up lost Iranian supply, there is widespread skepticism in the oil market that it genuinely has the spare capacity.

Whether sanctions work or not, however, it may now be far from easy for Western states to significantly alter course to reduce or remove the restrictions, even if they want to.

In the United States, where Congress would have to agree, the White House may find it almost impossible to lift them, although it may issue more official waivers to allow more trade.

Both Tehran and Western powers, most recently the EU, have periodically offered to renew nuclear talks. But the gulf between them remains so wide that even if a possible meeting took place in April many analysts doubt it could achieve much.

"The terrible thing is that this is the moment there might be a possibility to at least begin to make progress," says Rosemary Hollis, head of the Middle Eastern studies program at London's City University. "But we are going to miss it."

IMPACT ON IRAN

Exactly what impact the sanctions will have on Iran and its already fractious and unpredictable politics is hard to say, particularly if they remain in place for years, analysts say.

If major Asian buyers joined in a broad boycott of Iranian crude, the International Energy Agency says its exports could fall by 1 million barrels per day by the end of the year.

Even with many states continuing purchases, exports are now running at some 2.2 million bpd against a more regular 2.6 million, their lowest in years.

While high global oil prices will mean Tehran may now be earning more per barrel, the falloff in volume may cancel that out. Foreign buyers are reported to be using sanctions to negotiate better prices.

With no new foreign investment in Iran's oil sector, output is expected to fall even more drastically in the years to come.

While Western states deny viewing sanctions as a means to topple Iran's clerical rulers, some in Washington, particularly in Congress, may be hoping for just that.

But any new Iranian government may be just as committed to the nuclear program, even if the present leadership, which crushed opposition protests after a 2009 election, were to fall.

What the growing economic pressure could do instead, however, is supercharge existing power struggles within the political, clerical and military elite.

The recent storming of the British Embassy, bomb attacks on Israeli diplomatic missions in Georgia, Thailand and India and a bizarre alleged assassination plot against the Saudi ambassador to Washington, some say, show a growing unpredictability.

Some Western officials and others worry about an Iranian gambit, such as an attack on shipping in the Gulf, that could ignite the kind of war sanctions were supposed to avoid.

"Iran will most likely continue to suffer the most, and over time the pressures might be too much for its economy and society to bear," says Alvi at the U.S. Naval War College.

"(But) I seriously doubt that Iran will give up its nuclear program without a fight, even with the increasingly difficult struggles to survive."

(AP) ? George Zimmerman once took criminal justice classes at the community college and was practically a one-man neighborhood watch in his gated part of town, calling police close to 50 times over the past eight years to report such things as slow-driving vehicles, strangers loitering in the neighborhood and open garages.

Now, suddenly, people are wondering if the 28-year-old Zimmerman is an earnest if somewhat zealous young man who was just looking out for his neighborhood, or a wannabe cop who tried to take justice into his own hands.

He has been at the center of a growing furor over vigilantism, self-defense and racial profiling since he shot and killed an unarmed black teenager who was walking through his neighborhood Feb. 26 carrying only a bag of Skittles and an iced tea.

Zimmerman, a light-skinned Hispanic, has claimed self-defense in the slaying of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and has not been charged, but many black leaders are demanding his arrest, and state and federal authorities are investigating. Florida's Stand Your Ground law on self-defense gives people wide latitude to use deadly force.

Attorneys for Martin's parents say Zimmerman is a "loose cannon."

"He's a wannabe police officer," lawyer Benjamin Crump said. "Why did he have a gun?"

But some neighbors welcomed his vigilance, at least before the shooting.

Samantha Leigh Hamilton, an auto-dealership employee who has lived on Zimmerman's street for about a year, said that she once left her garage door up and Zimmerman noticed it while out walking his dog. He notified another neighbor, who let Hamilton know.

"The only impression I have of George Zimmerman is a good one," Hamilton said Wednesday.

Hamilton said another neighbor, a black woman, would regularly inform Zimmerman when she was out of town so that he could keep an eye on her place. Hamilton said that when she moved into the middle-class, racially mixed community of about 250 identical townhouses, the black neighbor told her, "Hey, if you need anything, you picked a really good area, since George is part of our neighborhood watch."

Zimmerman, who was captain of the neighborhood watch and licensed to carry a gun, made 46 calls to police since 2004, according to department records.

In one police call report, the dispatcher noted that Zimmerman was calling about a vehicle "driving real slow, looking at all the other vehicles in the complex and blasting music." In another call from last August, Zimmerman reported on two black male teens in the neighborhood. He considered them suspicious.

A police spokesman in Sanford, a city of 53,000 people outside Orlando that is 57 percent white and 30 percent black, did not return calls for comment about Zimmerman's repeated reports.

Sanford city commissioners on Wednesday voted 3-2 to express "no confidence" in Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. over the handling of the fatal shooting. The commission can't fire Lee, however, because the police chief reports to the city manager.

Hamilton said there had been several break-ins in the past year, including one three doors away in which burglars took a TV and laptops.

"When I hear about him calling the police constantly, it kind of makes sense to me because we had so many break-ins recently," she said.

The homeowners association's February newsletter said that Sanford police had beefed up patrols in the neighborhood and that officers on bicycles were making random checks of front yards and backyards. It was not clear how big the neighborhood watch was, but Zimmerman was the dominant force.

"If you've been the victim of a crime within the community, after calling the police, please contact our captain, George Zimmerman ... so we can be aware and help address the issue with other residents," the newsletter said. It added that the neighborhood watch group was looking for more participants at its monthly meetings.

USAonWatch, the national neighborhood watch organization, said Zimmerman's watch had never registered with the group. A vice president of the homeowners association didn't return a call Wednesday.

According to police, Zimmerman spotted Martin walking through the community on the teen's way back from a convenience store. The teenager was visiting his father's fianc?e, who lived in the gated community. Zimmerman told a police dispatcher that Martin had his hand at his waistband and had something in his hand.

"This guy looks like he is up to no good ? he is on drugs or something," Zimmerman said.

The dispatcher advised Zimmerman not to follow Martin. Moments later, neighbors bombarded 911 with reports of a struggle between the men and the sound of a gunshot. When police officers arrived, Martin was lifeless, face down on the ground, while Zimmerman was bleeding from his head and his back was covered in grass, as if he had been on the ground, the police report said.

Sanford police issued a statement Wednesday defending their decision not to arrest Zimmerman. They said that when officers arrived, he claimed self-defense, "which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony."

The police chief said Zimmerman claimed he was attacked by Martin after he had given up his chase and was returning to his truck.

In a letter to the Orlando Sentinel, Zimmerman's father said his son wasn't a racist. Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic. "He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever," Robert Zimmerman wrote.

Zimmerman moved with his parents from Manassas, Va., to Florida about a decade ago. He lived with his parents in nearby Lake Mary for several years before moving to the Retreat at Twin Lakes, records show. He lives in the gated community with his wife, Shellie, a licensed cosmetologist, but is now in hiding because of death threats.

Zimmerman had taken classes at the local community college, but his work history was spotty. He worked at a pressure washing business and then at CarMax, the national used-car dealer, but left in 2008, according to court records. It was not immediately clear what he did for CarMax or what he has been doing since then.

In 2005, Zimmerman was charged with resisting arrest with violence. State alcohol agents said Zimmerman pushed them while they were arresting a friend of his during an underage drinking operation at a bar. Zimmerman avoided a conviction by going into a pretrial program that is offered to people with no prior arrests.

Neighbor Raffie Gaffar said he is troubled by the fact that Zimmerman patrolled the neighborhood with a gun. Gaffar, a registered nurse, said he had never met Zimmerman and lived in a different section of the development.

"That is crazy. That is totally crazy," Gaffar said. "Why does he have to carry a gun? Something is totally wrong with that picture."
