Almost Christmas Movie Review | Video - POPSUGAR Entertainment

I'll see just about any movie with Paul Rudd in it, and it's no surprise I jumped at the chance to see him and Paul Giamatti in Almost Christmas. The comedy was showing at the Tribeca Film Festival, and it was quite the surprise for me ? mainly because Rudd wasn't my favorite part. Watch my review and find out what was!

High performance semiconductor spray paint could be a game changer for organic electronics

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Researchers at Wake Forest University's Organic Electronics group have come up with a novel solution to one of the biggest technological barriers facing the organic semiconductor industry today. Oana Jurchescu, an assistant professor of physics, and a team of researchers developed a high performance organic semiconductor 'spray paint' that can be applied to large surface areas without losing electric conductivity. This is a potentially game changing technology for a number of reasons.

Organic thin film transistors are currently deposited by one of three methods. Drop casting and spin coating conduct electricity well but are limited to small area applications. They could not be used to make a wall-sized, flexible video screen for instance. On the other hand, organic spray-on techniques can be applied to large areas but have poor performance when compared to their small-area counterparts.

Jurchescu's work provides the best of both worlds. The spray-deposition technology developed in her lab produced the highest performance organic thin film transistors for this method to date -- (April 2, 2013) -- comparable to those of drop casting and spin coating. Unlike drop casting and spin coating, her spray-deposition technology can be applied over large surfaces to any medium-from plastic and metal to human skin.

Her team's research, High Mobility Field-Effect Transistors with Versatile Processing from a Small-Molecule Organic Semiconductor was published April 2, 2013 in the journal Advanced Materials.

Because of its superb performance and the fact it can be applied over large areas quickly (it is also inexpensive to process compared to inorganic semiconducting materials like silicon), it has the potential to be produced in commercial quantities. The technology is a big step towards realizing futuristic devices such as transparent solar cells on building windows, car roof and bus stations, electronic displays in previously inaccessible spaces and wearable electronics due to the organic plastics' thin, lightweight and conformal nature.

PFT: Moon still sees bias against black QBs

ForSaleGetty Images

The Rams currently hold the Redskins? first-round pick in the 2013 draft, thanks to the RGIII trade.? The Rams may not actually be using that pick.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the selection ?clearly is for sale.?

That Rams, who also have the 16th overall pick, would surely like to trade down and get more picks.? Last year, the combination of coach Jeff Fisher and G.M. Les Snead put together a great draft, thanks to having extra picks.? The more picks, the better the chances of emerging with good players.

Pick No. 22 comes one spot before the Vikings? first of two first-round selections.?? A team that wants a cornerback, receiver, or inside linebacker the Vikings may be targeting could be tempted to jump the line.? Which is precisely why every team creates smokescreens about who they do and don?t want.

Like most round-one trades, don?t expect anything to happen before the Rams are on the clock.? Teams that trade up want a specific player; trading up too early creates the risk that the player won?t be there.

Of course, doing the trade when the team is on the clock entails risk, since there?s a chance one of the two teams won?t be able to call the trade in to the league office.? Unless each team calls the trade in separately, the trade doesn?t happen.? And with only 10 total minutes to get it all done, there?s a chance that cutting it too close could keep the trade from happening at all.

Logitech G19s Gaming Keyboard

Makers PC gaming peripherals are in the unenviable position of having to meet gamer's simultaneous demands for top-of-the-line products and innovative products that offer new and better ways to interact with technology. Finding the balancing point between these two concerns is a tricky business. For example, Logitech G19s gaming keyboard showcases the latest trend, the inclusion of an integrated display, providing a way to track and monitor in-game information or chat with teammates without monopolizing precious screen real-estate. It's an interesting idea we've seen once or twice before, but it's not quite clear whether this will be an improvement that sticks, or a gimmick that fizzles out.

Design
The Logitech G19s made for gamers, and it's evident just from looking at the keyboard. Instead of a plain looking key-covered slab, the keyboard has extra buttons and features sprouting from every spare bit of surface area. In addition to the usual keyboard and numeric pad, you'll find integrated media controls, including a roller knob for volume adjustment. On the left end of the keyboard, you'll find 12 programmable macro buttons to the left of the standard keyboard, similar to those seen on the Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90 or Logitech's own G710+ Mechanical Gaming Keyboard. Each key can be programmed with up to three different macro commands, swappable at the touch of a button.

The keys themselves can be customized, with adjustable backlighting that lets you pick any of 16 million RGB color options. You can also set the backlight color to change when you switch the keyboard into gaming mode. An integrated gaming mode switch disables the Windows key to prevent any accidental keystrokes from pulling you out of your game, and shifts from one mode to another with a sliding switch, so there's no fear of switching modes with mistaken press of a button. Plus, by assigning a different backlight color to the game mode, you'll immediately know which mode you're in.

The keys themselves are molded plastic, coated in a UV coating to protect the keys against fading, with laser etched keycaps and two-colors?while most keys are black, the WASD and arrow keys have a silvery-grey colored keycaps for easier recognition. The keyboard also offers 110-key anti-ghosting, and six-key rollover, which will handle the multiple keystrokes of combos and rapid-fire attacks without stuttering.

The G19s has a plastic chassis, similar to that seen on the recent G710+, but instead of accenting the black plastic with orange, the G19s uses deep blue. On the underside of the keyboard, molded into the plastic chassis, are channels for managing cords for mice or headphones. A detachable wrist rest provides extra support for those who want it, and has a hydrophobic coating to resist smudging. The light plastic construction of the keyboard and wrist rest may not be to everyone's liking, but it wasn't a noticeable issue during my testing.

What was noticeable, however, was the style of key switch. Instead of using mechanical key switches?like those seen on the Corsair Vengeance K90 or the Logitech G710+?the G19s utilizes silicone membrane switches, which provide a markedly different feel. Unlike mechanical switches, which offer crisp tactile feedback, light actuating force, and register a keystroke with only a partial key press, membrane switches have a mushy feel, and require pressing each key all the way down, bottoming out the key well. While this may not be problematic in the short term, it makes for a slower, less comfortable experience, and requiring more effort for each keystroke will have an effect when you're playing League of Legends for three or four hours straight.

Features
The G19s has plenty of gamer-friendly features, but the most notable is the built-in LCD display, what Logitech calls the GamePanel. Through the small display you'll be fed a steady stream of information, from game stats to system data, VOIP information or video playback. The display is built into the keyboard with an adjustable angle hinge, so you can set the angle of the small screen to your liking. It's not the first gaming keyboard we've seen with an integrated display?we've seen similar in the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 and the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate?but it is by far the most affordable.

The keyboard uses a lot of juice running that display, so the USB cable used to connect it to your PC also includes a connection for an AC power adapter?yes, you'll need to plug your keyboard into a wall outlet. Making up for this fact are two USB pass-thru connections on the keyboard, letting you plug in two additional USB devices without having to snake the cables around to plug into your desktop tower.

Logitech gives you plenty of ways to tweak and customize the G19s, and it does all of this customization through Logitech's Gaming Software 8.45. The downloadable software lets you tweak the lighting, record and edit macros, and select from pre-programmed profiles for a wide range of current games. The software is Windows-only (Windows 8/7/Vista) though, so Mac and Linux gamers are out of luck.

Performance
I tested the G19s keyboard both at work and play, and it was competent in both. As mentioned earlier, the use of membrane switches instead of mechanical does result in a slower, less efficient typing experience, but nothing too egregious?it simply puts the G19s on the same level as any other non-mechanical keyboard.

As a gaming keyboard, the G19s does especially well when the programmable macros are brought into play. MMOs, like World of Warcraft or DOTA 2 are ideal, while first person shooters, with their point and click actions, hardly use them. Recording macros is very simple; simply press the MR (Macro Record) button on the keyboard to begin recording a macro, and press it again to end recording. When tested in game, the performance was decent, but those who rely on rapid-fire attacks and flurries of activity may find themselves slowed by the membrane switches.

The integrated display suffers from the same problem as those on the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate and the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7, namely that the display is out of your immediate field of vision, requiring you to look away from your monitor in order to focus on a smaller image. It seems like several of the major game peripheral companies are experimenting with built-in keyboard displays of late, but it's a niche concept that has yet to really gain traction. Unless you earnestly want that extra display, your money might be better spent on a high-performance keyboard sans screen.

Conclusion
While the Logitech G19s does check off several items on any gamer's checklist, like programmable macros, customizable lighting, and an integrated display. What it's missing, however, keeps it from getting a strong recommendation. The decision to use membrane switches instead of mechanical will turn away many discerning buyers, while the plastic construction and the required AC adapter will put off even those who aren't picky about key-feel. As a result, the Corsair Vengeance K90 remains the Editors' Choice for gaming keyboards, while the slightly more expensive Razer DeathStalker Ultimate is our recommendation for those demanding an integrated display.

AT&T Q1 2013 earnings: $3.7 billion income on revenue of $31.4 billion

AT&T Q1 2013 earnings $37 billion income on revenue of $314 billion

AT&T just posted its earnings for the first quarter of 2013, and the market couldn't help but ding the company, which is now trading down in after hours markets. The business as a whole posted a net income of $3.7 billion, which is slightly up from $3.6 billion one year ago. Meanwhile, company revenues took a slight hit, which sit at $31.4 billion -- down 1.4 percent from the previous year. In terms of the company's wireless business, though, there's plenty of reason for optimism. The company was able to snag an additional 296,000 postpaid subscribers and put a solid 1.2 million people on smartphone plans during the quarter. For those keeping track, smartphone sales now account for 88 percent of AT&T's postpaid handsets. Unsurprisingly, the company is making more money than ever off of its data plans, which account for $5.1 billion of the company's business. As for the wireless segment as a whole, income is up 21 percent and AT&T is pulling in revenues of $16.6 billion with a 28 percent profit margin.

Encouraging signs were also revealed for U-verse, as the company's broadband service netted an additional 731,000 internet subscribers and 232,000 television subscribers during the quarter -- its best performance in two years -- for a grand total of 8.7 million subscribers. Naturally, one segment of Ma Bell's business isn't looking too hot, and that's the traditional wireline business, as revenues have fallen 10 percent from the previous year. Given the size of this segment, and the weakening demand for the service, it's easy to understand why investors might be slightly uneasy, even in light of all the encouraging news.

Chiefs could make rare choice of OT at No. 1

(AP) ? Playing on the offensive line is about as unglamorous as it gets in professional football.

Nobody pays much attention to the guys in the trenches until flags are flying. They spend Sunday afternoons getting punched, kicked and thrown to the turf, their fingers smashed and their face masks twisted ? not to mention whatever goes on at the bottom of those piles.

The best offensive tackle will never be as valuable as, say, the best quarterback, and rarely does one of the guys up front stoke the passions of a fan base weary of losing.

So perhaps it's no surprise that since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, only twice has an offensive lineman been selected first overall in the draft ? Orlando Pace in 1997 and Jake Long in 2008.

The Kansas City Chiefs could make it three on Thursday night.

In a draft without a top-end talent at quarterback and no clear-cut No. 1 prospect regardless of position, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to call out the name of one of two offensive tackles ? Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M or Eric Fisher of Central Michigan ? after Kansas City hands in its selection at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

"Last year, people picking at the top of the draft were looking for quarterbacks. And fortunately, they were there," said former NFL coach Jon Gruden, now an analyst with ESPN. "If you're looking for a left tackle this year, you're a lucky guy."

The Chiefs insist that they're not necessarily looking for a left tackle; they're looking for the best available player, and Joeckel and Fisher happen to fit the bill.

But it helps the cause of both Joeckel and Fisher ? or maybe even Lane Johnson, an offensive tackle from Oklahoma ? that Kansas City could be unsettled at the position by draft night.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on left tackle Branden Albert, and he's signed the tender worth about $9.3 million for next season. But they've also granted the Dolphins permission to speak with Albert's representatives, and it's becoming increasingly likely that a trade will happen.

That would make the selection of left tackle an obvious choice.

"What I have to do is what's best for the Kansas City Chiefs," said general manager John Dorsey, who helped put together some of the Green Bay Packers' best drafts but is calling the shots from the GM chair for the first time after being hired in January.

"I'll explore every option and available thing," he said, "and then you'll being to weigh those decisions, and you have all the way up until that last minute."

It didn't come down to the last minute a year ago.

The Colts revealed on Tuesday of draft week that they were selecting quarterback Andrew Luck first overall, and that allowed some of the dominos to start falling. The Redskins traded up to nab quarterback Robert Griffin III, and the draft was off and running.

That won't be the case this year, partly because there's no QB worth the No. 1 pick.

Players at the game's most vital position have been chosen first overall four straight years, and 10 of the last 12. And the Chiefs probably would have made it five straight if there was someone worth the pick. Instead, they traded with San Francisco to acquire Alex Smith this offseason.

So, everything appears to be circling back to a blindside protector.

The St. Louis Rams decided in 1997 that Pace was a better option than anybody in a forgettable quarterback class that included the likes of Jim Druckenmiller, Danny Wuerffel and Pat Barnes. Pace became a three-time All-Pro and made seven straight Pro Bowls in his 13-year career.

Long, who the Dolphins picked first in 2008, also became an All-Pro and has made four Pro Bowls in his five-year career. But betting against the quarterbacks that year didn't pay off nearly as well for Miami ? Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco were selected later in the first round.

One of the advantages to choosing an offensive tackle is the relative risk. The position is typically easier to evaluate, and project, than some of the skill positions, and rarely do linemen taken high in the draft completely wash out.

Joeckel won the Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman after protecting Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel so successfully last season. Fisher was a third-team All-American who shot up draft boards with an eye-opening performance at the NFL's scouting combine.

"With Joeckel, the floor is extremely high. I can't imagine him coming in and being a bust," said ESPN college football analyst Todd McShay. "Fisher is not as technically sound. You also don't see consistently the tape against top competition. That's nothing that Fisher has done. He can only play who he can play. But I just think Joeckel to me has the highest floor of the three.

"Who knows what Kansas City thinks," McShay said, "but to me that seems to be the right pick, because there is very little bust potential when it comes to Joeckel."

Dorsey and new Chiefs coach Andy Reid have refused to give any indication of who they might pick Thursday night, assuming they still have the No. 1 selection. The only thing they've made clear is that they intend to choose whoever they believe is the best player.

"It's the first pick in the draft," Dorsey said. "I look at it as a positive because what it is, is you get a shot at the best player in the draft."

SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? Rescuers using floodlights worked into the night Wednesday to attempt to free dozens of people believed trapped under an eight-story building housing garment factories that collapsed near Bangladesh's capital, killing at least 87 people.

In some places, they were able to cut holes into the jumbled mess of concrete with drilling machines or their bare hands, and pass water and flashlights to people trapped inside.

"I gave them whistles, water, torchlights, I heard them cry. We can't leave them behind this way," said fire official Abul Khayer. He said rescue operations would continue through the night because many survivors were still believed to be inside the collapsed building.

Less than five months after a factory fire killed 112 people, the disaster Wednesday again underscored the unsafe conditions in Bangladesh's massive garment industry. Workers said they had hesitated to go to work because the building had developed such large cracks the previous day that it had been reported on local news channels.

Abdur Rahim, who worked on the fifth floor, said a factory manager assured them there was no problem, so they went inside.

"We started working. After about an hour or so the building collapsed suddenly," he said. He next remembered regaining consciousness outside the building.

Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir told reporters during a visit to the site that the building had violated construction codes and "the culprits would be punished."

Among the textile businesses in the building were Phantom Apparels Ltd., New Wave Style Ltd., New Wave Bottoms Ltd. and New Wave Brothers Ltd., which make clothing for brands including The Children's Place and Dress Barn.

Jane Singer, a spokeswoman for The Children's Place, said that "while one of the garment factories located in the building complex has produced apparel for The Children's Place, none of our product was in production at the time of this accident."

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy and their families," Singer said in a statement.

Dress Barn said it to its knowledge it had "not purchased any clothing from that facility since 2010. We work with suppliers around the world to manufacture our clothing, and have a supply chain transparency program to protect the rights of workers and their safety."

Workers said they didn't know what specific clothing brands were being produced in the building because labels are attached after the products are finished.

Sumi, a 25-year-old worker who goes by one name, said she was sewing jeans on the fifth floor with at least 400 others when the building fell. "It collapsed all of a sudden," she said. "No shaking, no indication. It just collapsed on us."

She said she managed to reach a hole in the building through which rescuers pulled her out.

Reports suggested the death toll was likely to rise.

"We sent two people inside the building and we could rescue at least 20 people alive. They also told us that at least 100 to 150 people are injured and about 50 dead people are still trapped inside this floor," said Mohammad Humayun, a supervisor at one of the garment factories.

Tens of thousands of people gathered at the site, some of them weeping survivors, some searching for family members. Firefighters and soldiers using drilling machines and cranes worked with local volunteers in the search for survivors.

An enormous section of the concrete structure appeared to have splintered like twigs. Colorful sheets of fabric were tied to upper floors of the wreckage so those inside could climb or slide down and escape.

Rescuers carried the body of a young boy from the building, but it was not immediately clear what he had been doing inside. The building, in the Dhaka suburb of Savar, housed a bank and various shops in addition to the garment factories.

An arm jutted out of one section of the rubble. The lifeless body of a woman covered in dust could be seen in another.

Rahim said his mother and father, who worked with him in the factory, were trapped inside.

"I have no idea what is going on," he said.

Mosammat Khurshida wailed as she looked for her husband. "He came to work in the morning. I can't find him," she said. "I don't know where he is. He does not pick up his phone."

Zahidur Rahman, a spokesman for Enam Medical College and Hospital, said by Wednesday evening 87 people had been confirmed dead. Brig. Gen. Mohammed Siddiqul Alam Shikder said 600 people had been rescued.

At the morgue of the medical college, many wailed as they waited for the bodies of their loved ones. "Where's my mother? Where's my mother? Tell me, tell me, oh Allah, oh Allah," Rana Ahmed cried.

The November fire at the Tazreen garment factory drew international attention to working conditions in Bangladesh's $20 billion-a-year textile industry. The country has about 4,000 garment factories and exports clothes to leading Western retailers. The industry wields vast power in the South Asian nation.

Tazreen lacked emergency exits and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built. Surviving employees said gates had been locked and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off.

Brain biology tied to social reorientation during entry to adolescence

Apr. 23, 2013 ? A specific region of the brain is in play when children consider their identity and social status as they transition into adolescence -- that often-turbulent time of reaching puberty and entering middle school, says a University of Oregon psychologist.

In a study of 27 neurologically typical children who underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at ages 10 and 13, activity in the brain's ventromedial prefrontal cortex increased dramatically when the subjects responded to questions about how they view themselves.

The findings, published in the April 24 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, confirm previous findings that specific brain networks support self-evaluations in the growing brain, but, more importantly, provide evidence that basic biology may well drive some of these changes, says Jennifer H. Pfeifer, professor of psychology and director of the psychology department's Developmental Social Neuroscience Lab.

"This is a longitudinal fMRI study, which is still relatively uncommon," Pfeifer said. "It suggests a link between neural responses during self-evaluative processing in the social domain, and pubertal development. This provides a rare piece of empirical evidence in humans, rather than animal models, that supports the common theory that adolescents are biologically driven to go through a social reorientation."

Participants were scanned for about seven minutes at each visit. They responded to a series of attributes tied to social or academic domains -- social ones such as "I am popular" or "I wish I had more friends" and academic ones such as "I like to read just for fun" or "Writing is so boring." Social and academic evaluations were made about both the self and a familiar fictional character, Harry Potter.

In previous research, Pfeifer had found that a more dorsal region of the medial prefrontal cortex was more responsive in 10-year-old children during self-evaluations, when they were compared to adults. The new study, she said, provides a more detailed picture of how the brain supports self-development by looking at change within individuals.

The fMRI analyses found it was primarily the social self-evaluations that triggered significant increases over time in blood-oxygen levels, which fMRI detects, in the ventral medial prefrontal cortex. Additionally, these increases were strongest in children who experienced the most pubertal development over the three-year study period, for both girls and boys. Increases during academic self-evaluations were at best marginal. Whole-brain analyses found no other areas of the brain had significant increases or decreases in activity related to pubertal development.

"Neural changes in the social domain were more robust," Pfeifer said. "Increased responses in this one region of the brain from age 10 to 13 were very evident in social self-evaluations, but not academic ones. This pattern is consistent with the enormous importance that most children entering adolescence place on their peer relationships and social status, compared to the relatively diminished value often associated with academics during this transition."

In youth with autism spectrum disorders, this specialized response in ventral medial prefrontal cortex is missing, she added, citing a paper she co-authored in the February 2013 issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders and a complementary study led by Michael V. Lombardo, University of Cambridge, in the February 2010 issue of the journal Brain. The absence of this typical effect, Pfeifer said, might be related to the challenges these individuals often face in both self-understanding and social relations.

"Dr. Pfeifer's research examining self-evaluations during adolescence adds significantly to the intricate puzzle of this turbulent age period," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation and dean of the graduate school. "Researchers at the University of Oregon are piecing together how both biology and the environment dynamically and interactively support healthy social development."

National Institutes of Health grants F31MH075299, L40HD059442 and L40MH087356 to Pfeifer primarily funded the research. Other support came from the Santa Fe Institute Consortium, Brain Mapping Medical Research Organization, Brain Mapping Support Foundation, Pierson-Lovelace Foundation, Ahmanson Foundation, Tamkin Foundation, Jennifer Jones-Simon Foundation, Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation, Robson Family, William M. and Linda R. Dietel Philanthropic Fund at the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, Northstar Fund and the NIH National Center for Research Resources (grants RR12169, RR13642 and RR00865).

Co-authors with Pfeifer on the new study in the Journal of Neuroscience were: UO psychology graduate students Lauren E. Kahn, Junaid S. Merchant and Shannon J. Peake; Kim Veroude, a visiting researcher and graduate student from VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Carrie L. Masten of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee; Matthew D. Lieberman of the University of California, Los Angeles; John C. Mazziotta, director of the Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center; and Mirella Dapretto of the Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center and UCLA Center for Culture, Brain & Development.

Show us your talent or hobby and you could win an AT&T HTC One!

HTC One

We wrapped up a contest yesterday and gave away a few phones, but you know us, we just can't give away enough stuff! This week we have an AT&T HTC One to give away. This contest will be much like last week's HTC One Developer version giveaway, so if you entered last week or just wish you had, this will seem familiar, with one catch.

  • The last video contest was great, but this time we want to see you doing your favorite hobby, whether that be singing, dancing, painting, scuba diving, spelunking, animal rescue, underwater basket weaving, baking... you get the idea. If you love doing it, we want to see it. (Umm... keep it clean though folks.) Shoot a video of yourself with your current smartphone, if possible. Doesn't matter how old and crappy your phone is. Doesn't matter if it's an iPhone. Or an old BlackBerry. We wanna see your face on the screen.
  • Upload your video to YouTube. (You can leave it unlisted if you want, and you can delete it after this contest is over.)
  • THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART: Embed your video in this forum thread. Leave us a message along with it if you want, but all you need to do is click the little video button then paste in the link to your video. Easy as pie. (See the pic in the forum thread if you need help.)
  • Do you live on planet Earth? You may enter this contest. Open to everyone BUT remember the phones are AT&T versions so if you want to enter you better make sure the device is compatible with your carrier first.
  • We'll close the contest at 12:01 a.m. May 1. Plenty of time to get creative and get entered.
  • The prize is an AT&T HTC ONE, just the device and whatever comes in the box. Accessories and service are on you.

Get it? Got it? Good. Get to it!

Enter to win a HTC One

Long Island News - Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims Leads ...

A.G. Schneiderman, D.A. Vance, Other Law Enforcement Officials, Advocates And Community Members Gather To Commemorate National Crime Victims? Rights Week; Speakers And Victims Reflect On The Theme ?New Challenges; New Solutions?

(NEW YORK) ? The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr today hosted the 28th Annual Crime Victims Candlelight Vigil. The Annual Vigil brings together law enforcement officials, victim advocates, community leaders and members to commemorate National Crime Victims? Rights Week. Reflecting on the theme ?New Challenges; New Solutions,? speakers included A.G. Schneiderman, D.A. Vance, New York City Department of Corrections Commissioner Dora Schiro, New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Executive Deputy Commissioner Michael C. Green, and crime survivors expressing the shared mission to end violence and deliver justice for its victims. The Vigil took on special poignancy this year in the wake of the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut last December, and the bombing of the Boston Marathon just days before.

?We are proud to partner with so many leading voices at our annual NYC Crime Victims? Ceremony and Candle Light Vigil,? said Susan Xenarios, co-Chair of the Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims. ?This is an opportunity for all New Yorkers to share a moving and healing event together as we honor and commemorate National Crime Victims? Rights Week.?

?In our work to achieve a safer and fairer society, we must honor and learn from those who have suffered most at the hands of injustice,? said Attorney General Schneiderman, whose office co-sponsored the vigil. ?As we begin National Crime Victims? Rights Week, let us remember the lost, celebrate survivors? strength, and redouble our efforts to keep communities safe. For those of us in law enforcement, we also honor those who have been lost by reaffirming our solemn commitment that we will do everything in our power to ensure public safety in every community.?

?This important annual event promotes awareness about those who suffer from violence and those who have been silenced by it,? said District Attorney Vance. ?By coming together to honor this event, we renew our commitment to serving our communities and remembering those who have been affected by crime.?

The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims Annual Vigil is a forum for community members to share insights, engage in problem-solving strategies and speak as a united voice on behalf of the all victims of crime and violence in New York State. This year?s theme, ?Honoring Our Journey,? inspires reflection on the victims we have lost, the survivors we celebrate, and our collective work to promote justice in our society.

The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims provides a comprehensive range of direct services and advocacy for victims of violence and other crimes, their families and the communities in which they reside. The Coalition?s mission is to inform and educate members and the public about current developments in legislation, our criminal justice and law enforcement systems, victim service and trauma treatment modalities and resources which impact on services and justice for victims and the crime victim movement on a local, state and national level.

With 97 members, including crime victim assistance advocate programs, government agencies and community based programs providers, the Coalition covers the five boroughs of New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Westchester counties.

The Crazy Accurate Thermal Images That Saw Dzokhar Tsarnaev Through a Boat Tarp (Updated)

There was no small amount of technology that went into the capture of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev, but perhaps none was more impressive than the helicopter-mounted, forward-looking infrared camera that confirmed once and for all that there was someone hiding in a boat in Watertown, Massachusetts. And that he was almost certainly Dzokhar Tsarnaev. More »

Ouya Limited Edition units now fast tracked for shipping

Ouya

Ouya shows that they realize the value of communication, fills us in with another shipping update

Ouya wants to be the next big thing on console gaming. We've heard today that they now have 10,000 developers lined up, and since the end of March they have been busy shipping units out to Kickstarter backers. They realize that to be successful, they need to get units in the hands of people who want one, and more importantly, keep communicating with the folks waiting on their order.

They are doing that with weekly shipping updates on their Kickstarter page and via email, like the one they have sent out today. There's no real breaking news to tell, but the prove that they are listening to feedback and have adjusted a few things in their shipping workflow:

  • Limited Edition units have been "fast-tracked" and will be shipped out sooner, cutting nearly two weeks off the original time.
  • Standard orders are no longer prioritized over orders with extra controllers. The orders with spare controllers will start shipping early next week.
  • They are working on methods to get international orders out the door faster

Good news all around, and it's awesome to see a company let us know how things are going during the crazy process of shipping out tens of thousands of units. Well done, Ouya.
